Former Toon Man Tommy Walker Passes Away
From the official website: Newcastle United are saddened
to report the death last night of former United player Tommy Walker.
Tommy, died on 13 June, aged 81, in a nursing home in Manchester after
a short illness.
Tommy played in both the 1951 and 1952 FA Cup Final successes at Wembley,
he was a pacy right winger, his penetrating sorties into the opponents'
penalty boxes creating many a goal for United.
Tommy was born on 14 November 1923 in Cramlington, he is survived
in Manchester by his wife Lily, son Thomas, and grandsons Richard
and Andrew.
Tommy's death means there are only four surviving players left from
the 50s Cup winning sides, Charlie Crowe from the 1951 Final, Alf
McMichael from 1952 and Tommy Casey and Vic Keeble from the 1955 side.
United Chairman Freddy Shepherd said:
"It's always a very sad time when one of our legendary players dies.
Tommy was the archetypal winger and contributed much to our successes
in the early 1950s. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Lily
and his other family members."
Walker played 206 games for Newcastle, scoring 38 goals which puts
him in at number 59 in United's all-time top goalscorers list. R.I.P
