Dutch & Go
News group Reuters are reporting the following:
Patrick Kluivert's move to Valencia could be in jeopardy after
a knee problem was detected during a medical, Spanish sports daily
Marca reported on its website on Friday.
The Dutch striker was due to sign a three-year contract with with
the Primera Liga club after being released by England's Newcastle
United last week.
Marca said an initial medical examination had revealed a knee problem,
adding that further tests would be needed to assess whether the move
could go ahead. Kluivert was originally scheduled to be officially
unveiled on Friday evening.
Apparently, Greggs will move in for his services if he fails his medical,
to front a new advertising campaign. Although they could face stiff
competition from Burger King and other giants of the food industry
as they look to snap up a mega superstar who is hungry to succeed.
Who Is Next Out The Toon Door?
Newcastle would be wise to add a revolving door to the shopping list,
because we are going to need one for all the comings and goings. We
all expected a busy Summer and while there have been many rumours
of Toon bound transfers, it seems the traffic is all one way - out.
With the departures of Jamie McClen, Patrick Kluivert,
Aaron Hughes and now it would seem Andy O'Brien - just
who is next to go?
It appears that it is only a matter of time before the unwanted trio
of Craig Bellamy, Laurent Robert and Hugo Viana
are off the wage bill and then there is talk of Steve Harper,
Darren Ambrose, Lee Bowyer and Nicky Butt all
being made available at the right price.
Add to those the speculation that Shay Given, Jermaine Jenas
and Shola Ameobi are all being courted by other clubs and that
is one hell of a exodus potentially on the cards.
Not even talking possible departures into consideration, we were always
going to need at least 4 new signings this close-season regardless.
And now?
Portsmouth Interest in Andy O'Brien Confirmed
Newcastle United have confirmed Portsmouth's interest in Toon defender
Andy O'Brien, the official site read: United
defender Andy O'Brien has been given permission to speak to Portsmouth.
The Republic of Ireland defender, who has just returned from international
duty following Ireland's World Cup qualifying games with Israel and
the Faroe Islands, joined The Magpies from Bradford City in March
2001.
O'Brien has made 157 starts for Newcastle, with 15 appearances from
the bench, scoring seven goals.
Pompey already have former United stars Andy Griffin and Lomana LuaLua
in their squad.
Newcastle of course handed OB an extended contract upto 2008 at the
turn of the new year and at the time manager Graeme Souness cited
the need for more players like the Republic of Ireland man. Quite
a few Toon fans were livid on the back of that but could the canny
Scot, with O'Brien's contract running out, have handed the defender
a new deal so that he could get some money for him when it came to
selling him? |
