Toon Player Ratings Vs Southampton (h)

Shay Given – 6 - Had very little to do and couldn't have done much to prevent Crouch's equaliser.

Steven Taylor – 8 - His distribution was a little wayward early on and he had quite a shaky first period. But the young full back totally redeemed himself after the interval and was the driving force behind many forward moves down the right. His brave last minute block earned us the three points as much as either goal did and in this form the injury to Stephen Carr remains an insignificance.

A Tale Of Bitter Fathers, Footballing Bigamy & David Kelly

As a lot of people who frequent this site from time to time know, my football loyalties don't only cover the lads in black and white. Being from Scotland obviously I love the national team (even if supporting them has now become a chore rather than a hobby) but when it comes to club football it's not only my beloved Newcastle United who warm the cockles of my heart. Yes. I'm a football bigamist. A footballing two timer. A football love rat.

Souness Admits Yakubu Interest

Following a spate of speculation over the weekend linking Newcastle with a move for Portsmouth's Nigerian international striker Yakaubu, United boss Graeme Souness has confirmed an interest but reports that he is on his way seem wide of the mark.

Souness said:

"Yakubu is one of several players who do interest me.

"It's no secret that we have to replace the top man at the end of the season, and whoever comes in is going to have a monumental task to fill one of his boots, never mind both.

"Whether that's Yakubu, or whoever comes in, it's a difficult job."

Meanwhile Real Madrid's chief Arrigo Sacchi has rubbished yet more weekend reports linking us with Michael Owen this time, saying:

"The contact with Newcastle was only about Morientes and never for Owen or any other player.

"At this moment Owen is a very important player for us and the coach does not want the exit of any other players.

"Owen is happy and he is more settled in Madrid."

Distin - Will He, Won't He?

Toon transfer target Sylvain Distin has once again reiterated a desire to remain at Manchester City but the one-time former Newcastle loanee hasn't exactly ruled out a move to Tyneside.

Comments from the official Man City website:

"I am happy to be here and I want to stay but who knows what will happen in the future.

"I have not spoken to Newcastle but if City accepted a bid then I would have to. I am in a good situation and a happy situation at this club and I want that to carry on."
