NUFC History: It Happened On This Day - 1976

29 years ago to this day, Newcastle beat Derby County 4-3 at St. James' Park. Goals by Tommy Craig (penalty), Geoff Nulty, an own goal by Todd and a late Malcolm Macdonald winner ensured all 3 points for Gordon Lee's men who were level at 3-3 with 8 minutes on the clock thanks to goals by Powell, George and Rioch for the Rams. Just one of many enthralling matches that season.

Teams that day:

United: Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Nulty, Keeley, Howard, Burns, D.Craig, Macdonald, Gowling, T.Craig.

Derby: Moseley, Thomas, Nish, Rioch, McFarland, Todd, Powell, Gemmill, Lee (Davies), George, James.

Att: 45,770

Newcastle were regarded as the most entertaining side in the country, scoring a total of 71 goals while conceding 62 as the Magpies finished in a rather disappointing 15th place in the 1st Division on 39 points. In the League Cup Lee's men went all the way to Wembley but were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Final.

Top goaslcorers that season: Gowling (30), Supermac (24), T.Craig (11)

Souness Can Deal With The Boos

Souness quotes:

"I feel for my players because they feel they don't deserve the whistles they are getting.

"I can deal with it, I've got the easier job standing on the touchline. They are the ones who have the hard job going out there and trying to perform under pressure but that's the price on the ticket at Newcastle United and you have to deal with it.

"If you cannot deal with it then go and work in the lower leagues. That's what I tell the players.

"We all get paid very well and the price on the ticket is that when we aren't doing well, we get criticised. That's the deal."

"The only way we can go forward is if we stick together and don't start becoming fragmented.

"Football only mirrors life. When the going gets tough you need to stick together and that's the time you find out about people and what they are made of.
