NUFC History: It Happened On This Day - 2000

5 years ago to this day, Newcastle drew 2-2 with the great unwashed at the Stadium of plight. United defenders Didier Domi and Cristovao Helder, a loan signing from Deportivo La Caruna, put Sir Bobby's men 2-0 up but a brace from rat boy Kevin Phillips ensured a point a piece. Diego Gavilan, a £2m signing from Cerro Porteno made his Magpie debut in that game, coming on for Rob Lee as a second half substitute.

Teams that day:

United: Harper, Barton, Pistone (Hughes), Dabizas, Helder, Speed, Dyer, Lee (Gavilan), Shearer, Ferguson, Domi (Gallacher).

Sunderland: Sorensen, Makin, Gray, Schwarz, Craddock, Butler, Summerbee (Reddy), McCann, Quinn, Phillips, Kilbane.

Att: 42,079

Sunderland picked up 4 points off us that season with THAT 2-1 win at St. James's in August 99 that they never stop bleating on about... a blessing in disguise really as in come Sir Bobby Robson to give us 3 top 4 finishes and Champions League football. The Mackems of course, despite finishing 7th that year with United down in 11th place on 52 points, soon returned to their true level. Being relegated as the worst ever Premiership side in 2003.

Top goaslcorers that season: Shearer (30), Speed (13), Ferguson (10)

Were you at that match? If so write in with your memory of the game.

Toon To Enter InterToto Cup?

Found on the 'This is the North East' website:

By Paul Fraser

Newcastle United could put their name forward for the much-maligned InterToto Cup if Graeme Souness' side fail to qualify for European competition this season.

With just 13 games remaining of the Premiership campaign, the chances of 12th placed Newcastle claiming a UEFA Cup spot again look slim.

Souness has refused to discount the possibility of enrolling the Magpies in the InterToto Cup - a pre-season competition that was dismissed by every English club last time around.

Fulham and Aston Villa were the last sides to enter two years ago and the former actually booked a place in the UEFA Cup via the highly criticised qualifying knock-out tournament.

In 2001 Newcastle, under Sir Bobby Robson, were beaten at the final hurdle by French side Troyes after victories over Belgian outfit Lokeren and Germans 1860 Munich.

Playing in it again would mean the Newcastle squad would have to return for pre-season training early - a situation that would be far from ideal for the players and coaching staff.

The supporters would also see the move as an embarrassment but Souness, who has until February 28 to decide on entry, is only focused on doing what is best for the club.

Newcastle are still in the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup this season so there is an outside possibility that European football could make a return to St James' Park even without playing in the InterToto.

And Souness, whose side prepare to play Charlton on Tyneside today, said: "I don't think we can rule out anything. I accept that it's very important for a club like this to be involved in Europe for all the reasons we've discussed. We'd have to look and consider every possibility. I don't know how the chairman (Freddy Shepherd) views it.

"There has been talk of an American summer tour. There are no definite plans yet."

Well it certainly did us no harm in 2001... although we didn't actually qualify.

Alan Shearer - A True Great

Alan Shearer has been our number 9 for nearly 9 years now. Very appropriate indeed. However what isn't appropriate is that Alan Shearer still hasn't picked up a winners medal. Sure, he's had his chances - when we set history as the only team in FA Cup Final history to play for a point - but we don't need some London based Manchester United sympathising idiot to tell us with the benefit of almost a decade of hindsight that Shearer would have won more medals if he'd moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 1996. It's easy to say now, and it may have been the safe bet back then, but could we really see ourselves in a position where we're about to wave goodbye to perhaps the greatest striker in our clubs history still waiting for that elusive honour?
