Portsmouth's Yakubu To Sign For NUFC In £7m Summer
Deal?
According to today's Independent
he will be - with the paper reporting that Newcastle have agreed a
£7m fee with Portsmouth to bring the highly rated centre-forward to
the Toon in the close-season. Newcastle of course were tipped to sign
the player in the January transfer window with various reports claiming
he was available from anywhere between £6-10m. Graeme Souness even
had the Nigerian striker watched and admitted he's a player who "interests"
him - quoted saying the following on the 17th of January 2005:
"Yakubu is one of several players who do interest me. "It's no
secret that we have to replace the top man at the end of the season
(Shearer), and whoever comes in is going to have a monumental task
to fill one of his boots, never mind both.
"Whether that's Yakubu, or whoever comes in, it's a difficult job."
So, we've been linked with Crystal Palace's Andy Johnson, Aston Villa's
Nolberto Solano, Real Madrid's Michael Owen and now Pompey's Yakubu
in recent weeks... would these rumours have anything to do with impending
Season Ticket renewal forms?
Moi, cynical?
You bet.
P.S Don't be surprised to see Yakubu at the Toon in the Summer or
Andy Johnson. As for Michael Owen? Dream on...

What A Difference A Week Makes
We're into the last 16 of the UEFA
Cup and Olympiakos await. It won't be easy but it's a tie we must
be positive in as we have a great chance to reach the Semi-Finals
again. What a difference a week makes though. An hour into the game
in Heerenveen most were apprehensive and believing that we were just
playing out time before major rebuilding took place in the summer.
Then knocking the Dutch side and Chelsea out of the UEFA and FA Cup
respectively has suddenly turned a season that was destined for negative
press into yet another chance to dream of a possible trophy. It's
never dull here!

Behind Enemy Lines: The View From A Bolton Fan
Newcastle-online caught up with Mark
Hayes, the Editor of a Bolton fans' site Bolton Wanderers Mad to get
his views on Sunday's match at St. James' Park, NUFC, football, Bolton
and more. This is what he had to say...
Q: Sam Allardyce was offered the Newcastle job and turned it down,
was he foolish or wise considering the trouble Graeme Souness has
had?
I know the Newcastle job was something which Sam considered very seriously,
but ultimately his heart is with Bolton and I think his aim was to
finish the job which he had started here. I think only time will tell
whether or not he made the right decision but I felt that for him
it was a case of better the devil you know. At Bolton he is idolised
even through the bad times, had things gone wrong at Newcastle then
I doubt they would have been as patient with him being an outsider.

How To Manage Lazy French Wingers The Souness
Way
Treat Em' Mean,
Keep Em' Keen
In the 4 years that Laurent Robert has been at United, I have
been equally delighted and frustrated with the Frenchman. There
have been times where he has had me up off my feet jumping about
like a mad man celebrating one of the many wonder goals in which
he has scored and there have been many times where I have never
wanted to see him in the Black & White shirt ever again. To
paraphrase Sir Bobby Robson; our enigmatic No.32 is a challenge.
A challenge Graeme Souness has realised from day one. When the
Scot was first appointed many, including myself, were afraid
that Robert's days were numbered. There is no way a tough disciplinarian
like Souness would tolerate a player like Robert we thought.
