Another Toon Youngster Fails To Make The Grade
19 year-old Toon striker Lewis Guy has joined
Doncaster Rovers on a 2-week trial report the Stellar Group
(agents) after Newcastle released the prolific youth and reserve
team centre-forward. We reported yesterday that Darlington boss
Dave Hodgson was keen on him, but the player has opted for the
League 1 side instead.
Guy had this to say: "I was very sad when Newcastle
said I could go, it was always my dream to make it at the club
and play for the first team and although I didn't really have
many opportunities, I felt I was making good progress. I really
enjoyed my time there and hope the club can be successful again,
the fans deserve it.
"But as soon as I knew Doncaster were interested in taking a
look at me I didn't hesitate. Although other clubs wanted to
take a look at me, Dave Penney has shown a lot of enthusiasm
in getting me to the club and I owe it to him to give it my
best shot.
"Now it is up to me to show I can score goals for Doncaster,
I will be giving it everything I have got."
Whether it's his lack of ability or alleged off-field activities
that have led to him being released, most will see this as yet
another youngster in a long list who has failed to make the
grade and questions need asked of the youth and coaching set
up at this club because it's now becoming one too many.
Guy becomes the 78th player to have pulled on the Black & White
shirt just the once, making a second half substitute appearance
at home to Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Cup back in December.
UEFA Cup: NUFC 2-1 SC Heerenveen (4-2 agg)
Toon through to the last 16, winning
4-2 on aggregate
Newcastle made it into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup for the second
season running with a comfortable 2-1 win over SC Heerenveen
on a bitterly cold Thursday night at St. James' Park.
An own goal by Michel Breuer on 10 minutes set United
on our way and 15 minutes later Alan Shearer doubled
the lead, firing in a 22-yard free-kick from Laurent Robert's
lay off.
With just 10 minutes to go Heerenveen pulled one back after
Shola Ameobi foolishly handled in the area from a corner, Arnold
Bruggink putting away the spot kick.
So, a relatively trouble free passage into the last 16 with
a comfortable and well deserved victory carries on our recent
good form and ends a perfect week for Graeme Souness, the team
and of course the supporters. Lets hope it continues.
Well done Graeme and the lads.
