Milner Up Front?
Speaking about the protracted
departure of Craig Bellamy, Graeme Souness insists Newcastle are not
short up front, with James Milner an option, he believes.
Souness said: "There are certain things I can't forgive,
and certain things I can't forget.
"If I had been seen to be weak, there would have been no future for
me in this dressing room."
"Craig Bellamy has averaged nine goals in the last two seasons, half
of those outside the Premiership.
"Why are we talking about him so much?
"I'm more than confident that between Shola Ameobi, Alan Shearer and
Patrick Kluivert, we'll get goals. That's not to mention James Milner,
whose best position I believe is through the middle. I'm sure James
would agree with that.
"Shola is a young man who is now for the first time having an extended
run in the first team at this football club. I believe he will get
goals for us.
"We have to have more than one man scoring goals. Alan Shearer has
kept this club's head above water for a long time, and we need more
than one man scoring 20 goals a season."

Bellamy On His Loan Move To Celtic
Craig bellamy, speaking to Sky Sports
News:
"It's not a permanent move, which I don't think I could have done
because, to be truthfully honest, I am still emotionally attached
to Newcastle.
"I didn't really want to leave and, the way it has happened, I have
found it very difficult because I do love the club and I am not ashamed
to say that.
"I couldn't make a decision now and say I am going to start my career
somewhere else because I am still coming to terms with life without
Newcastle.
"I've set my whole career around Newcastle to try and chase that Champions
League spot. It is a great club and I am honoured to have played for
that football club.
"I just needed time to get round things and I couldn't commit myself
to a long contract.
"I was very honoured that Birmingham wanted me. I spoke to Steve Bruce,
who was an amazing person and it was great to speak to him because
he is a Geordie and there was no better person to speak to. He understood
exactly what I was saying.
"I found it hard to leave Newcastle. It wasn't about signing a four-and-a-half-year
contract and the money. It was getting my head around the fact that
I wouldn't be coming back and playing for this great football club,
so this gives me time to think about my situation and see where it
goes from there. I just need to have a look.
"This all happened in such a short space of time for me. One minute
I'm picking up the 2004 Player of the Year award in Newcastle and
then within four days I'm never playing for the club ever again.
"It's such a lot to take in such a short space of time, but I couldn't
commit my future to one club so this was a great opportunity for me."

Bernard On Leaving The Toon
Speaking in today's Journal Olivier
Bernard had this to say on his transfer to Southampton:
"I'm gutted to leave Newcastle, but the coach said to me that I
would not play if Celestine Babayaro was fit, so I really had no choice.
"I need to play for my own benefit - I had to leave. I feel gutted
for the fans. I feel I never let them down and I'm sorry. But I'm
a player and I need to play. I hope they understand me.
"I spent five years in Newcastle and it really hurts to leave.
"Some of the people think I'm probably not good enough, and they signed
another left-back.
"When you are not wanted somewhere you have to move on. It's hard
for me.
"It's a difficult situation - that is why Southampton came for me.
But it's a challenge to save the club from relegation.
"Newcastle is a big club and I spent five years of my career there.
"When my career is finished, or even before if I can, I want to go
back there. It is in my heart.
"I came here when I was 20 and people from Newcastle are really friendly.
I made a lot of friends.
"I don't want to play Newcastle - that would be too hard for me.
"I still like the club and wouldn't want to play against them - especially
at St James' Park!"
And good luck to Olly. Nobody has came out of this in better shape.
I'll remember his performance at the San Siro as the best left-back
display I've ever seen. I'll remember his crunching tackles. I'll
remember his heart and the way he just picked himself up, kicking
after kicking. He was indestructible and had a good few years at the
Toon. Oh well... |
