Part 1: Celtic Bid For Shearer Genuine - Says Bobby

Quotes attributed to Bobby Robson in tomorrow's Sunday Mail have our manager claiming he had a phone call from Martin O'Neill enquiring about Alan Shearer with Bobby going to Freddy Shepherd with this enquiry.

Anyway here are the quotes as first published by Football 365:

"Martin was on the phone to me to ask about the situation with Shearer. He wanted to know if we would let him go.

"I told Martin I would mention it to my chairman but said I thought he had no chance of landing Alan.

"I thought it was a big enough story to tell my chairman about but he said to forget it.

"He wasn't for selling Alan and I felt the same way. So it never got past first base.

"Alan will want to finish his career in the black and white and retire at the end of the season.

"He's said it is what he plans to do and once he has made a decision he never goes back on it.

"I can understand why Martin would have wanted Alan to join Celtic. He is a leader and a tough guy but it was just a non-starter."

3 Wins In 15: Toon Need To Get Back To Winning Ways

Conjunctivitis, Shearer, that problematic right-back pursuit and of course mounting injuries aren't the only things that must be keeping Bobby awake at night (and many Toon supporters no doubt) - no the worrying fact that we have won only 3 times in the last 15 games must also be a concern ahead of the new Season that gets underway a week today at the Riverside.

Admittedly 5 of those games in which we failed to win have come in Pre-Season but winning breeds a winning habit yet the only habit we have picked up in Pre-Season is that of our poor away form from last Season with 2 defeats and 2 draws - no win. We beat Kitchee on penalties but that doesn't count.

On paper we have an easy start to the Season, we don't play anyone who finished above us until our 13th fixture - Manchester United at home on the 14th of November so getting off to a winning start is imperative.

Especially as 3 points against Middlesbrough will break a trend that has grown since the 21st of November 2003 - our last 3 points away from St. James' Park in the League when we come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Fulham.

A losing start to the Season doesn't bare thinking about. Lets hope we are in for a winning trend.

Woody Injury Update

While Bobby stopped short of actually saying that Woodgate is losing his fitness battle to be fit for the Middlesbrough game in 7 days time as the headline reads in today's Chronicle, it doesn't look good for our defensive kingpin.

Bobby said:

"Jonathan is desperate and determined to get back into things.

"The trouble has been that he got a bit frightened about the injury when we had to pull him out of things for a couple of days.

"We'd like to get him bombing on again, but the problem we have is in having to close things down for a few days for the eye infection.

"That couldn't have come at a worse time for us in terms of our preparations."

Woody frightened? A man who smashes bottles over his head...

What is it with injuries and bad luck at our club? Just when things are running smoothly, pop goes a hamstring, or a thigh strain, or a bout of conjunctivitis, or a strop from the Captain, or a (insert your own cause of concern here).

Robert Challenge

Following on from Laurent Robert's claims last week that he is in discussions with United over a new 3 year deal, today's Chronicle has revealed, via that mysterious 'club source', that our wayward Frenchman will have to show his worth to win himself a new deal.

Worth as in goals and assists? Worth as in 100% commitment and effort? Or worth as in both? If he does the latter I doubt there will be many complaining if the club handed him a new deal.

Lets hope he "shows his worth"...

Toon Army Barmy Over Nicky Butt

I have finally managed to collate all your views on the Nicky Butt signing in response to an article hailing his signing and published them on the site. It appears I'm not the only one who regards the signing of a winner as an excellent purchase. Thanks to all who wrote in.

Your Nicky Butt views!
