Bobby Sacked!

Bobby Thanks Toon Fans For Loyalty & Support:

"I am massively disappointed not to be able to finish the job I came here to do.

"I have immensely enjoyed my time here as manager, and I wish the club all the best of success in the future.

"At the present moment, I have absolutely nothing to say except to thank the Geordie fans for their tremendous enthusiasm, loyalty and support."

Bobby's Record:

Bobby accumulated exactly 300 points for Newcastle in the Premiership and has an impressive overall record while in charge.

Played: 255, Won: 119, Drew: 64, Lost: 72

You can leave your thanks for Bobby here

Full statement from the official NUFC website:

After a disappointing start to the Barclays Premier League season, the Directors of Newcastle United have informed Sir Bobby Robson that they have decided that he is to be replaced as Team Manager.

The Directors of Newcastle United wish to place on record their thanks for the way in which Sir Bobby has worked tirelessly over the past five years to try and bring success to the club. There is no hesitation by the club in recording its sincere appreciation for the way in which Sir Bobby has handled team affairs during that five year spell which has seen a significant turnaround in the club's fortunes.

The club agreed, early in 2003, to extend Sir Bobby's contract by one further season. However, after careful consideration, the club decided it was in the best interests of all concerned to re-visit that decision.

The club continues to have the greatest respect and admiration for Sir Bobby and his lifelong achievements both at home, abroad and particularly at the club he has supported since a boy, his beloved Newcastle United.

He leaves having remodelled the Newcastle team with many young players admired and coveted across the UK and Europe. The club will no doubt continue to benefit from the knowledge and experience he has given during his time here.

Poor Results Got Bobby The Boot

Player power, boardroom rifts, media and fan pressure, all things that could be used to reason why Bobby finally bit the bullet but the truth of the matter is that results on the field just weren't good enough. No League win in 8 games and a horrendous run of winless games on the road. Our form over the past few months has been that of a relegation fighting team. Of course all of those things mentioned previously may have played a part in Bobby's sacking but had the Toon been winning, nobody would be complaining. Had we picked up 12 points in the 4 games instead of the two everything would be rosy in Geordie's garden - including Fat Fred's and Bobby's.

A rundown of our form:

Last League win:

Chelsea (h) 2-1 25th April 2004

A run of 8 games.

Last clean sheet in the League:

Aston Villa (a) 0-0 18th April 2004

A run of 9 games.

Last away win in the League:

Fulham 3-2 21st Oct 2003

A run of 16 games

Add to that our appalling record of draws (all competitions) which now stands at 25 draws in 65 games and the facts speak loud and clear. Poor results ultimately ended Bobby's 5 year reign.

Houllier & Venables Are An Insult Too Many

Rant...

Today's speculation over who is to succeed Bobby has already seen two familiar names thrown into the hat. Former Liverpool manager Gerrard Houllier and former Spurs, Barcelona, England, Boro and Leeds boss Terry Venables. Personally speaking I would be shocked and angered if any one of the pair ended up as Bobby's replacement regardless of capacity or length of contract.

Terry Venables is a slimy two-faced back stabbing charlatan at best who has proven nothing as a manager and if we were to even consider him there will be an uproar all over Tyneside and throughout Black & White corners of the world, of that I am certain of. Bring him at our club at your peril. He is the Arthur Daley of management. To replace a Geordie knight, a great man and a respected man in Sir Bobby with such a manager would be an insult too far as would bringing in Gerrard Houllier.

He's a canny bloke, a nice man and a good manager but what has frustrated Toon supporters over the past 12 months is dour football, strange substitutions, playing players out of position and poor buys. Houllier is the king in that respect - ask Liverpool fans. Better still ask Rick Parry the man who handed him his P45 after 5 trophies.

Toon supporters have been hurt badly, very badly these past weeks. First we sell Jonathan Woodgate, then Dire disgraces our loyalty, but gets away with it and now our manager has been sacked. Not to forget the media circus that has followed our club like a pack of starving wolves, wolves being fed I might add by the club. What we want now is the right man, someone who will come in, get tough with our overpaid under performing wasters, organise them into an attractive winning football team capable of challenging for the Title and put a stop to the rot that is eroding our belief and confidence in this club we show blind loyalty to and always will. We've been kicked, slapped and spat on and now we want something back.

Freddy Shepherd and Co. dip our short pockets enough to pay themselves millions of pounds and Venables or Houllier may seem a safe option, or a interim option but we don't want that - we want the best for our money. Otherwise there was no point in letting Sir Bobby go.

For you wages Freddy Shepherd it is your job to find the best man, the right man. Houllier and Venables are neither and never will be.

This is one decision you have to get right otherwise we'll be doing the sacking next and it won't be the poor sap in the managers chair that feels our wrath it will be you and your cronies.

Toon Admit Roon Defeat

According to this evening's Chronicle that is who printed the following:

Newcastle United have finally admitted defeat in their bid to sign Everton superstar Wayne Rooney, (writes Alan Oliver). The St. James' Park Hierarchy have accepted that Rooney is on his way to Manchester United and, like the rest of football, they can only sit back and wait to see if the £25m deal goes through by tomorrow's midnight deadline.

A disappointed United Chairman Freddy Shepherd today: "It is better that we have tried and failed than not to have tried at all."

What Shepherd also tried to do on Saturday morning was sign a central defender - and he is still trying after he missed the defeat at Aston Villa to sit by his phone. The Chronicle revealed on Saturday that United had slapped in a £5m bid for Celtic central defender Bobo Balde.

But, unlike a lot of clubs, Celtic are not strapped for cash and they were able to turn United's bid down. Indeed, after playing for Celtic in their 1-0 victory over Rangers yesterday, Balde headed straight off to represent Guinea in their World Cup qualifiers this week.

The Premier League offices were closed today and United now only have one day to try and sign the central defender *Sir Bobby Robson desperately needs after his defence leaked another four goals on Saturday.

United now have the worst goals against column in the top flight, along with Charlton Athletic. The result meant that most United players gave the media a wide berth on Saturday night, but those I spoke to thought that the club were interested in Juventus's Croatian international Igor Tudor.

And Juventus did sign a central defender today when they snapped up Fabio Cannavaro - the player Alan Shearer clashed with in the Champions League at St. James' Park the season before last - from Inter Milan.

While United are desperate for a central defender, there was talk over the weekend linking Shola Ameobi with Spurs and Kieron Dire with both Aston Villa and Portsmouth, but Shepherd says he has not heard nothing on either score.

*I thought Bobby had been sacked and when did we leak in another 4 goals?
