Toon Player Ratings Vs Norwich Now Online!

Where Is The Desire To Win?

Readers comments...

By Craig Hope

Winning is a habit. Sadly, the majority of the Newcastle United squad does not possess this particular trait. On the evidence of the season thus far there are two solitary players who seem to possess this quality - namely Craig Bellamy and Nicky Butt. Personally, I am not of the band of supporters who are raving about Butt's performances so far. I believe he has played no where near his potential. I have been rather more impressed by his attitude and evident desire. He is used to winning. He doesn't want to lose. [More +]

Everton Reject NUFC's £23.5m Offer & Man Utd's Bid

Latest...

Everton have confirmed they have rejected Newcastle's second offer of £23.5m for Wayne Rooney as well as Man Utd's bit of £20m.

From the official Everton Website:

Officials at Goodison Park have confirmed that they have rejected an improved bid from Newcastle United for Wayne Rooney as well as turning down the offer submitted on Wednesday by Manchester United.

The Magpies, who had an offer of £20 million turned down at the beginning of the week, made contact with Everton on Thursday afternoon with an offer believed to be in the region of £23.5 million. Manchester United officials contacted the Blues' hierarchy late on Wednesday with their own bid of £20 million - the same amount as Newcastle had previously offered.

It now seems crystal clear that a bidding war is underway for the 18-year-old striker, though Blues Boss David Moyes insisted only 24 hours ago that it would take a fee well in excess of £24 million to tempt Everton to sell.

Meanwhile Alan Shearer, speaking after the Norwich game, had this to say on Wayne Rooney:

"I think it would be great if we signed Wayne Rooney. He will be a fantastic asset and a great investment for this football club.

"It would be a great coup for the city and for the club if we can attract him here. If he is thinking about going abroad to Real Madrid or whatever then he can do that in four or five years time.

"He is only 18 and he is still effectively learning his trade. He will only be 22 or 23 in four years time so he's got plenty of time on his side and I think it would be a great step for him.

"Obviously it's all up in the air at the moment. He would put my place under threat. It would put everyone under threat. So what?

"If he can come in and do well then great. It's always been the rules of football if someone comes in and does well you support him and say well done.

"We are all in it for this football club and if Wayne Rooney comes in an improves us then we are all for it and I am 100 per cent behind that.

"If we can get him it would be brilliant."

The Toon Army Don't Deserve Success

Last night's shocking "support" from the stands confirmed one thing; we don't deserve a successful team. The apathy shown towards the match and our club was shocking and an all-time low for me. Why would any decent player want to play for fans who whinge, moan, groan, criticise and boo at the drop of a hat. Where was the support, the lift, the getting behind the lads? This is as chronic as any ailments in our team. We rightly bang our chests when a player doesn't give his all for the shirt yet we aren't giving our all to the lads out on the pitch.

The St. James' Park atmosphere is dead and will never ever return.

BOOOOOOO!

Madness: Man Utd Push Up Our Bid For Rooney To £23.5m

Manchester United, as expected, have now joined the chase to sign Wayne Rooney with Everton confirming that the Red Devils have submitted a bid of £20m for the England striker - a bid that was rejected.

An Everton Spokesman said: "We have turned down a £20m bid for Wayne from Newcastle - and we will treat this bid (Man Utd's) in the same way."

In response to their bid, Sky Sports are claiming that Freddy Shepherd has upped our own offer to £23.5m with Man Utd expected to match that later on today as an auction looks likely to ensue.

Alex Ferguson had this to say:

"We've made a bid today. He's a fabulous player. He showed that at Euro 2004 and he's a young player, too. He's not the finished article yet but we've got experience of bringing young players to the club and bringing them on.

"Newcastle's bid triggered things for us. I was hoping we could get him but time was running out and I started to think there was no chance.

"We will now wait to see what Everton say, but we have made our intentions clear that we would like to have the boy."

Bellamy On Rooney: I Will Have To Review My Position

Just when you thought this whole Wayne Rooney saga couldn't descend into any more of a farce, last night's goalscorer Craig Bellamy blurted out live on Sky Sports that he would have to review his position at Newcastle, echoing Shola's comments yesterday, if Wayne Rooney was to sign for the Toon. A move that is looking increasingly unlikely (see below).

Bellamy said:

"I love playing for Newcastle and I love everything about the club, but if Wayne Rooney comes, I will have to review my position because I am not sitting on the bench anywhere.

"I like Wayne Rooney a lot because he is a great player. He is my sort of player and it would be great for the club, but no good for Craig Bellamy.

"If he does come, I will have to consider my position."

Comments which prompted Bobby to blast back...

Bobby said:

"What Craig Bellamy should do is just honour his contract, all right? That is what he should do. At the moment, he is doing too much talking.

"He had a bit to say yesterday and he has signed a contract to play for Newcastle United Football Club. Honour the contract, Craig Bellamy, honour the contract like everybody else has to and just concentrate on playing and scoring goals for this club.

"If he is publicly saying that, then I am publicly replying to him, but I will tell him that face-to-face.

"What does he want to do? Does he want to be the manager or does he want to be the player?

"He is doing very well. That is what I am saying 'Hey Craig, just enjoy your football and score goals'. He has done well, but he can't make *threats to the club."

*Unlike Dire! The pantomime continues...
