Who Captain's the team seems to be the hot topic of the day and although
we all know that Big Al is the Club Captain, we don't exactly know
who his understudy is. It Was Hughes who took Shearer's armband after
the No.9 went off against Middlesbrough on Saturday but reports and
indications within the club during Pre-Season pointed to Dyer after
former incumbent, Gary Speed, was sold to Bolton. After Saturday's
shenanigans however, if Dyer was indeed the Vice Captain, he won't
be for much longer. So who would make the perfect Vice Captain? Who
would make the worst possible Vice Captain? Bearing in mind the Vice
Captain will almost certainly become the Club Captain once Big Al
retires.
Anyway lets have a look at some of the the canditates...[More

O'Brien, Bowyer & Caig Back In Training
Conjunctivitis victims Andy O'Brien, Lee Bowyer and Tony Caig will
all resume full training this week after recovering from the illness
that wrecked our Pre-Season preparations. Finally some good news at
the Toon. Keep it coming...
Toon Open Doors For Business
Newcastle's official website has revealed that Darsley Park, United's
training Head Quarters, is now open for business after the Conjunctivitis
outbreak forced the club to close it off but the eye virus seems to
have abated and officials within the club believe that's the last
of it. No more changing in their cars then...
Woodgate Out For Another 2-3 Weeks
Sir Bobby talking in the Journal, believes Jonathan Woodgate could
be out for a further 2-3 weeks which could see the United defender
miss the start of our UEFA Cup campaign. Woodgate will visit a German
specialist this week - Dr. Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt, nicknamed "Dr.
Feelgood" by his clients, in an attempt to finally get to the
root of his calf and thigh problems which have kept him out of action
for nearly 4 months.
Bobby said:
"Jonathan will be out for another two to three weeks. We're waiting
for a second opinion from the German specialist.
"It's taking too long and even though he did have a 50% rupture of
the calf muscle he should be recovered by now. We're concerned at
the time it is taking."
International Football: Andy O'Brien Out
Andy O'Brien has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad who face
Bulgaria at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday. The Toon defender is still
struggling with Conjunctivitis along with Tony Caig and Lee Bowyer.
The Irishman should be back in training by the end of the week however.
Whether he plays a part in our match at home to Spurs next Saturday
remains to be seen.
Viana Dropped As Portugal Win 2-1
After a poor 50 odd minutes in Portugal's opening 4-2 defeat to Iraq
in the 2004 Athens Olympics last Friday, Hugo Viana was dropped from
the starting lineup last night and didn't even come on as a sub in
his Country's 2-1 over Morocco. A win that keeps alive their hopes
of reaching the last 8. Man Utd's Christiano Ronaldo opened the scoring
for Portugal with Ricardo Costa grabbing the other.
Portugal's final group D game is against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
Skyscraper Planned Next To St. James' Park
From Building Design, the weekly paper for architects, comes
an interesting piece on the redevelopment of the Gallowgate area of
the City. Check it out...
High hopes for Geordie tower
August 2004
Ian Simpson is bidding to add Newcastle upon Tyne to the growing list
of English cities where he is building residential skyscrapers.
The Manchester-based architect is in pre-planning talks with the city
council to build a 50-storey tower as part of a mixed development
on former brewery land next to Newcastle United’s football stadium
in the Gallowgate area.
Simpson proposes a 165m tower featuring a hotel and apartments as
part of a £200 million, 140,000sq m scheme by Downing Developments.
There would also be 1,000 student units, 650 key-worker apartments
and 30,000sq m of offices and shops.
Simpson has already designed residential towers for Liverpool, Birmingham,
Manchester and Leeds, but this scheme could be the most controversial
yet.
Public outcry at a 32-storey residential tower designed by Stephenson
Bell on the banks of the Tyne forced its withdrawal from planning
last month.
According to Douglas Cockburn, a senior planner in the city council's
forward planning team: "Any proposal for a tower is going to
be controversial. But if there was potential [for tall buildings],
the Gallowgate area could be right because you have the massive backdrop
of St James’s Park football ground."
The proposal is set to be submitted to planners by the end of the
year and would form one part of the area’s wider regeneration.
The council has hired local practice Colin Buchanan & Partners
to draw up a masterplan and traffic strategy for the whole site.
Anything that brings jobs into Newcastle...
