Robbie Elliott Handed New 1-Year Contract

Toon defender Robbie Elliott, out of contract at the end of the season, has been handed a one-year deal to stay on for another season by Graeme Souness.

The Scot said:

"We are offering Robbie Elliott another year on his contract because he will be an important player in our dressing room next season.

"I am not saying that he is going to start every game, but he is a sound player and a sound person. He is the kind of person who is good to work with and who will be a voice in our dressing room next season.

"We will be bringing in some new players in the close season and it will be up to the senior professionals like Robbie Elliott to help them out."

A delighted Elliott had this to say:

"I have been keeping my fingers crossed that I would get a new deal and doing all I can on the pitch - and that is giving 100%."

Craig Bellamy To Bayern Munich?

From today's Daily Record:

Bayern Munich could be set to scupper Celtic's bid to land Craig Bellamy after being won over by the Welshman's Old Firm heroics.

The German giants sent manager Felix Magath and deputy chairman Uli Hoeness to Ibrox on Sunday to run the rule over a list of 'two or three' potential signing targets, believed to include Parkhead defender Bobo Balde.

But both men left Glasgow raving about Bellamy, who will be available for a fee of £6million from Newcastle this summer when his loan deal with Scotland's champions runs out.

In an exclusive interview with Record Sport Hoeness admitted Bellamy's explosive performance blew him away.

The 25-year-old notched a stunning solo effort to put Celtic 2-0up and coasting towards the victory which has all but secured a second successive SPL title.

And, even although Bellamy limped off with a hamstring strain two minutes into the second half, Hoeness had seen enough.

He said: 'There were two or three players we had discussed and we wanted to see. In my opinion Bellamy was the best player on the field.

'We make these kind of trips towards the end of the season when everything at home is almost decided. So it's not as if we were there just to watch Balde or Bellamy. It was more about gathering information.

'But, yes, I must admit Bellamy was very impressive.'

Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell is already in discussions about structuring a deal with Newcastle for the player, who will have a precautionary scan today to determine the extent of the injury that forced him to cut short his Old Firm displayLast night Lawwell restated his intention to tie down Bellamy on a more permanent basis.

But boss Martin O'Neill admitted before Sunday's derby he suspected a number of leading European clubs were waiting in the wings.

Those concerns have been under-lined by the visit of Magath and Hoeness, who are plotting for next season's Champions League with the Bundesliga title all but secured.

Last night, after Record Sport informed Celtic of Bayern's interest, Lawwell said: 'Anyone watching Craig Bellamy on Sunday could not fail to see he is a special player.

'I'm already on record as saying we'll do everything in our power to keep him at Celtic Park.

'He will no doubt have several offers on the table but he's certainly a player everyone connected with the club wants to keep here.

'There are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration - not least where Craig wants to play his football next season.

'But hopefully his experience at Celtic has been an overwhelmingly positive one and this can only be a major plus in our favour.
