Prem Result: MUFC 2-1 NUFC
Newcastle's disastrous run continues
after losing 2-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford this afternoon,
a 5th successive defeat.
Under-fire Graeme Souness made sweeping changes to the side in personnel
and shape, bringing in Peter Ramage for his full debut at right-back
with Stephen Carr playing a defensive role in the center of midfield.
The bandaged Robbie Elliott kept his place at left-back while James
Milner and Shola Ameobi occupied the left and right flanks respectively.
In the centre Charles N'Zogbia and Darren Ambrose sat alongside Carr
with Alan Shearer up front as the lone striker.
The Scots' intentions were clear; to contain the side that just 7
days ago had handed out a thrashing at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
Unlike that day however, the Red Devils were slow out of the traps
and it was the United of Newcastle that drew first blood. Ambrose
scoring a cracking goal with just under a quarter of the game gone.
Dodgy 'keeper Tom Howard kicked his clearance straight to the United
youngster who waltzed past a couple of Red shirts before firing past
the hapless American.
Newcastle took their lead into the break and were well worth it having
kept out Manchester with some terrific defending and goalkeeping while
at their end, the running of Milner, N'Zogbia, the goalscorer and
the battling qualities of Shola and Big Al had them troubled.
After half-time however the home side upped a gear and started getting
more and more into it with Newcastle sitting back, defending and trying
to catch them on the break.
It was Man Utd who caught out United though, Wayne Rooney making it
1-1 with a tremendous volley on the hour mark that Shay Given had
no chance with.
Lifted by their goal our FA Cup Semi-Final tormentors, without the
suspended Gary Neville and Paul Scholes and also missing Ruud Van
Nistelrooy from the starting line up, grabbed a second and the winning
goal with 15 minutes left. Wes Brown beating Shola to head past Shay.
So Souness' men boys lost yet again. Unlike previous defeats
though the Scot can be pleased with his team's performance as can
the fans with the Black & Whites putting in a sterling effort of grit,
determination and youthful exuberance. Food for thought and plenty
to ponder for the Scot. Stick with em' Graeme from now until the end
of the season - they have something to play for, unlike the other
wasters.
