Bring Back Michael Chopra, Graeme!

Poll Results

That's the cry from Newcastle-online readers who participated in a recent poll we conducted where we asked our readership whether they would like to see the Gosforth born striker back at United. A staggering 559 Toon fans voted yes they would like to see him back and only 112 fans said no they wouldn't.

Since joining League One side Barnsley on a season long loan deal, Chopra, who found the going tough at first as he acclimatised to his new life away from his home town club, has since went on to become the Tykes best player, scoring 17 goals in 38 appearances for the Yorkshire club.

Having been booed and jeered by certain sections of the Barnsley crowd for earlier poor performances as well as the target of racist abuse by a small minority of idiots, Chopra is now a firm fans favourite with his whole hearted, gritty and determined showings in the red shirt. A sign of his popularity comes in the shape of a signed No. 8 shirt with his name on the back which is being auctioned via the official Barnsley website. The bidding currently stands at £175.00 as of writing.

Having spoken to two died in the wool Barnsley supporters to get their views on the Toon man, it's clear to me that he's made quite an impression - they love him and hope he stays on longer. They also speak of his love for Newcastle United and his desire to make an impact at the club, which he has reiterated to the Barnsley press from day one.

While the Tykes faithful would love nothing better to snap him up on a permanent basis, Chopra himself would love nothing better than a return to the club in which his father introduced him to as a bairn. To get a fair crack of the whip.

With Craig Bellamy all but gone, Alan Shearer to become a year older, Patrick Kluivert's future undecided and Shola Ameobi having wasted the opportunity that Chopra just hasn't had, perhaps it's time Graeme Souness took a serious look at the Gosforth man by bringing him back hyem and giving him a chance? His goals and performances for Barnsley surely merit the opportunity he craves?

With just one full appearance to his name none of us can safely write him off as not being good enough can we? We'll never know one way or another. One thing is for certain, he can't do any worse than Ameobi has done in the numerous starts he has had in which he has failed to grab with both feet.

Bring him back indeed.

New 2005-06 Home Toon Top Unveiled

The new home kit for 2005-06 has officially been released by Newcastle United and is now on sale at the Club Store or via the official club website.

Unlike the current home top the design is more white & black, then black & white and the V neck stays but without the collar. There are 3 black stripes adorning the front of the shirt with black trimming around the sleeves. The Northern Rock logo is gold with a white border and looks to be printed on.

Thoughts? It's quite nice and I like the emphasis on white - it will make the players look taller and wider, not that Patrick Kluivert has any problems with the latter...

All in all it's a nice design. Although the lack of a collar and the V neck design doesn't appeal to me personally, I like it. It's an improvement on the current one.
