Newcastle-Online comment: July 14th 2004
According to the Chronicle Alan Shearer has issued what looks like
an ultimatum to Bobby - play me or I go seems to be the the message
coming from our Number 9's quotes.
Shearer said: "Everyone knows my love for Newcastle.
"The only time I'd consider leaving here was if the manager
told me before the season that I wasn't going to be a regular.
"Obviously, I want to play football and that would be
the only time I would consider leaving Newcastle. This season I want
to play football and enjoy it and, fingers crossed, play in every
game. That is the aim. "I don't want my last season
to be an anti-climax, I don't want that at all, to be honest. If the
manager said to me I wasn't going to be a regular I'd have to consider
things. "I want to play as much football as I can
in my last season. I think there's a good year left in my legs. I
was pleased with passing 20 goals again last season and I hope to
do the same if not better this year. "Hopefully,
there is another great year in me. My aim's to finish on a high.
"I heard about the offers - there has been one or two clubs who have
shown an interest. It's flattering. Obviously I'm doing something
right - I had a reasonably successful season with 20 goals."
July 15th: Shearer Reacts To Quit Claims - But Gives
Nothing Away
Alan Shearer, when quizzed by the media in Hong Kong regarding comments
attributed to him in the Chronicle, reacts in typical fashion - giving
little away.
Shearer said: "I did not say I would quit. What I did say
was that I wanted to play regular football in my final season at the
club. "There are reports that Newcastle are going to
sign some players, and with the excellent players we already have
I know full well that we can only play two up front.
"I'd never take my place in the team for granted, but form permitting
then obviously I'd like to be a regular."
July 16th: Bobby Not Too Pleased With His Captain...
It appears Bobby is none too happy with his Captain's 'play me or
I quit' then semi-retraction claims which have overshadowed Newcastle's
Far East Tour and caused unrest amongst supporters back home.
Bobby said: "I'm at a loss as to what this is all about.
It has all come as a surprise to me, although Alan seems to know rather
more about it. "This is not the time and place, we're
here on a pre-season tour and to raise some money for charity."
You're not the only one Bobby...
July 16th: Poor Bobby...
United Chairman Freddy Shepherd, not one to dismiss the opportunity
of free publicity, has become the latest in line to speak up over
Shearer's 'play me or I quit - I didn't say that' comments that have
quite literally caused waves both in the UK and in the Far East by
insisting that our Number 9 is going nowhere - as far as he's concerned
anyway.
Shepherd said: "As far as I'm concerned Alan Shearer
is going nowhere. "Knowing Alan, he will be seeing his
contract out for the rest of the season. "And isn't
it nice that a player of Alan's stature is so desperate to play for
Newcastle United and doesn't want to even think about missing a single
match? "It speaks volumes for the man. He is one of
the club's all-time greats."
And isn't it nice of Freddy to speak up on behalf of Big Al! Yet when
alleged comments of a rift between our Chairman and Bobby were doing
the rounds (and still are) we got nothing but silence... |
