Newcastle-Online comment: 11th July 2004
According to the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Sun Newcastle have asked
to be kept informed of any developments regarding Wayne Rooney's future
at Everton with figures of £30m being banded about. Apparently
Newcastle will sell Dyer for £10m and Viana for £5m to
raise half of the cash.
The story is quite believable until you get to the figures for Dyer
& Viana - they are worth more than that.
Conspicuously there is no reference to this story on either papers
websites so I've took the liberty of posting it myself...

Open £30m Roon Talks
By Niel Farrington
Newcastle United were last night linked with a sensational £30m
move for Wayne Rooney. The Everton youngster was a smash hit with
England at Euro 2004, scoring four goals.
But Everton look doomed to failure in their bid to keep the striker
- despite offering him a four-year £12.5m contract. manchester
United have been tipped as favourites to win the race for Rooney's
signature, with presidential hopeful Florentino Perez last week also
throwing Real Madrid's hat into the ring.
But sources close to the Newcastle board last night revealed United
have asked Rooney's representatives Proactive to keep them aware of
the situation...and that the £30m fee needed to secure his signature
would not be a problem. Some of that massive outlay could come from
a possible sale of Kieron Dyer - Newcastle are currently awash with
promising young midfielders, especially after the recent signing of
James' Milner from Leeds United.
Dyer would attract interest both home and abroad, including Man United
and Arsenal, and could bring in as much as £12m. Newcastle enjoy
excellent links with Proactive, who have helped set-up the Summer
tournament at St. James' Park as well as assisting in raising the
club's profile in the Far East.
