October was a fairly tame month in comparison with others. Souness
was starting to get a grip on things and results were good. A boring
month really. Then towards the end it all kicked off again in typical
Toon fashion. Who said what during the 10th month of 2004? Check it
out...
"We
came here to do a job, and we have done that. We came away without
any injuries which was always a worry so it's been a good night."
Graeme Souness on Newcastle's
5-1 over Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin in Israel (October 1 2004)
"I
shit myself. I thought it was whistling past the post. But maybe
that's a turning point, that bit of luck we need." Birmingham
manager Steve Bruce on Laurent Robert's free-kick which it the post
in the 2-2 draw with Birmingham City at St. Andrews (October 3 2004)
"You
were only fifth-choice for the Newcastle job." Robbie
Savage has a dig at Graeme Souness after the 2-2 draw with Birmingham
(October 5 2004)
"Hey,
Robbie, you would know all about shit teams." Graeme
Souness responds to Robbie Savage's jibes that Newcastle are a shit
team after the 2-2 with Birmingham (October 5 2004)
"It
would be a devastating blow for me if all of my team mates were
able to travel to Newcastle and I was left at home. I have so many
happy memories there and I want to do myself justice in front of
the United fans." Hugo
Viana on the UEFA Cup draw that saw Sporting Lisbon paired with
United in the group stages (October 6 2004)
"I
am pleased to announce a further successful year for United, delivering
a strong performance on and off the pitch." Freddy
Shepherd speaking after the club announced yearly profits of £8.3m
(October 7 2004)
"Manchester
United are one of the biggest clubs in the world but at Newcastle
there is a chance to catch them. There's no reason we can't win
something." Nicky Butt
enjoying life at Newcastle (October 10 2004)
"It
is a real privilege. My heart has always been in the club and I
look forward to continuing the proud tradition of our academy. The
region is a hotbed of football, and we must make every effort to
capitalise on that and make sure Newcastle United remains the only
club young players want to sign for." Kenny
Wharton on his return to Newcastle as a youth coach (October 12
2004)
"The
way they are treating me over the contract shows they have no respect
for me - that's something I really don't like." Olivier
Bernard on his contract situation (October 16 2004)
"Laurent has a future here but he has got to do things I want him
to." Graeme Souness on
Laurent Robert (October 17 2004)
"What me? You f****ng p***ck!." Craig
Bellamy to Graeme Souness live on Sky Sports as he trooped off at
the Valley having been subbed late in the game in Newcastle's 1-1
draw with Charlton (October 18 2004)
"I've not seen it, but I will speak to Craig and I will ask him
if his comments were directed at me." Graeme
Souness responding to a reporter when asked had he heard what Craig
Bellamy said when coming off at the Valley (October 18 2004)
"I
don't want a showdown - what do I want a showdown for?" Craig
Bellamy responding to claims that he and Graeme Souness would have
a meeting to discuss his remarks at the Valley (October 18 2004)
"All
these things have to stop, if we're going to win things at this
club we need to concentrate on what matters, not this petulance,
not people acting like children. It has to stop and it will stop,
I guarantee the supporters that. He (Bellamy) in particular has
to sort himself out." An
angry Graeme Souness after watching the tape and seeing for himself
what Craig Bellamy said when coming off at the Valley (October 19
2004)
"It
was unbelievable stuff. Neither one would back down and Souey was
absolutely steaming. Bellamy doesn’t think he did anything wrong.
He didn't want to come off against Charlton and said so." A
'club insider' claiming that Graeme Souness grabbed Craig Bellamy
by the neck and tried to throttle him (October 20 2004)
"If
you do anything like that again you will not play for this club
any more." The aleged comments
of Graeme Souness to Craig Bellamy (October 20 2004)
"F***
you, I’m the best player here anyway." The alleged
comments of Craig Bellamy in response to Graeme Souness' above alleged
comments (October
20 2004)
"I
was out of order for what I did at The Valley on Sunday and I want
to apologise to the manager. I knew within 10 seconds what I did
was wrong." Craig Bellamy
apologises to Graeme Souness for his comments when coming off at
the Valley (October 21 2004)
"I
want him here. You can't give up on players like him just because
you've had the kind of spat we've had. I want him at the club but
it has to be on my terms. Of course I accept the apology." Graeme
Souness accepts Craig Bellamy's apology (October 21 2004)
"He's
a cracking little player; fiery, with a genuine desire to do well
in this game but he has to learn there are rules you have to adhere
to." Graeme Souness likes
Bellamy the player (October 21 2004)
"We
must have spoken on 30 or so occasions as I tried to appeal to his
better nature. I have handed him hefty fines - but at the end of
the day I'd love him to be remembered for his football." Sir
Bobby Robson on Craig Bellamy (October 21 2004)
"The
reason I resigned from Newcastle is still happening at the moment.
The reasons for leaving there meant it was the right thing to do.
After four or five years it has not changed, the same things are
happening." Former manager
Ruud Gullit commentating on United's discipline problems (October
21 2004)
"I
know I will never get a better club than Newcastle United. There
is no other club I want to play for and it would be a dream for
me to stay here for the rest of my career." Craig
Bellamy hoping for one last chance at Newcastle (October 21 2004)
"Of
course, when we were together he wasn't happy when I left him out
to rest him - but I didn't mind that, I wouldn't expect him to be.
But there were no tantrums from him. He would simply train harder
the next time we were in and he knew my reasoning, knew why I'd
done it - three times in five years by the way! I knew just how
important he was to the team, to the club, its fans and as a representative
of the whole city. We've had no fall-out, no bust up. I want to
put an end to this because it is simply not true." Sir
Bobby Robson refutes claims that he and Alan Shearer had a bust
up prior to his sacking (October 23 2004)
"We
have been linked with Damien Duff but I am not sure if he'll want
to leave London. But that's the type of class player we want in
order to improve this squad because he is of the highest standard."
Graeme Souness on press
speculation linking him with a move for Damien Duff (October 24
2004)
"These
are not headlines I want to be involved in. I'm a 25-year-old with
a missus and two kids and I don't need that - and nor does the club.
It's not nice for the fans to read about the same player causing
aggro. It really hit home after the last week and now I just want
to get on putting in better performances for Newcastle." Craig
Bellamy promises to cause no more trouble for himself, his manager,
Newcastle and fans (October 27 2004)
