Vs Liverpool: What Is Wrong With Match Of The Day? |
6th March 2005

Tell me if I am wrong but aren't Newcastle v Liverpool fixtures considered
a big, big game in the English Football calendar? Well someone should
tell the BBC that. It took them over an hour to get to our game and
even then, to my sheer bewilderment, it came after the goal of the
month competition in which they even threw in Rommedahl's goal against
us! Listen up MOTD lads because I have something to lecture you about.
Firstly, looking down yesterday's fixtures I don't think anyone can
argue that Newcastle v Liverpool was not the 'Match of the Day'. Of
course it was, for fans and neutrals alike. So why in the hell did
MOTD start with a 0-0 draw down at Selhurst Park? So I am sitting
there thinking OK, so we must be next up surely? No. To my disbelief
on comes Norwich v Chelski that, tell me if I am wrong, was on Sky
PPV?
After the Highbury Henry v Pompey show came an enthralling game down
at St. Mary's… a real cracker of a fixture this one… not! Then comes
the goal of the month competition which I urge Toon fans to boycott,
and included the f**king Rommedahl goal against us! Mad? You better
believe it. Eventually Mr Gary Lineker who I might add has a good
first name ;) but has Leicester and Spurs so far up his asshole its
unreal, introduces what should have been, as the programme title is,
the Match of the Day!
Well OK I knew we had won and I thought I'd calm myself down now at
least the match is on. So what happens next? MOTD only goes and gets
worse by showing highlights that gave Liverpool much more credit than
their mediocre team deserved. The Liverpool and BBC links is enough
to make any fan sick; with Hansen and Lawrenson clapping their little
hands to sheer delight when Liverpool comes on and salivating, I presume
in a heterosexual way (well maybe not Lawro), every time Stevie Gerrard
touches the ball. The game ends and after the post-match interviews
with Souness, Shearer and Rafa Benitez comes on the Great Dane and
Marko Lawro. The show gets even worse…
All ponsy Lineker could muster up in the post-match analysis was about
Liverpool and how 'bad' they would fair in their European game. Lawro
agreed and that was it, on to the next game. I was stunned! They never
mentioned us once. Never mentioned Robert's goal, never mentioned
the way in which Souness has turned things around, they never gave
us the time of day… let alone the Match of the Day!
It's hardly surprising; we aren't often the main match on MOTD, mainly
because we play on Sundays due to UEFA cup commitments. However, come
on, this isn't on. Newcastle v Liverpool was voted the greatest ever
match in Premiership history. These two teams have two of the most
passionate and perhaps clan-like set of football fans in England.
At least ITV2 is giving us some cash for the UEFA Cup. Yet I have
some gripe about them too.
Note to Mr. Matt Smith, Ally MacCoist and 'what the hell do you know
world beater Townsend', when you're blessed with being at St. James'
Park don't mock and scoff at our club. Every time when the Michael
Owen/Newcastle link was brought up they burst into chuckles and sneers!
What the f*ck? Maybe we don't have a chance in signing him but don't
discredit us like that. Is it any wonder the bad press coverage we
get when the national media treats us in this way? For the tabloids
it's just too easy. Do they get away with it with Man Utd players?
Arsenal players? Liverpool players? No. Just go to Toon if you want
a story because they are willing to take it! Well I for one am not
any longer. The media needs to treat us with some more respect. You
might be thinking we need to win something first to gain respect?
Perhaps, but I still don't think that justifies the way in which the
media treats our football club.
Going back to the MOTD argument, I have a solution. Why not make the
MOTD a regional programme? Or at least have the matches from the North
East teams the main games in our region and the same around the country?
The BBC is too centralised in its regime and although I am proud to
be English I am also proud to be living in the North East. Thus, we
should have our teams, our 'Match of the Day' on our television screens
on a Saturday night.
