Newcastle-Online comment: January 20th 2005
Recent reports that our much hyped No. 8 was "close to tears"
after our 2-1 win over Southampton due to being on the receiving end
of abuse from an alleged hand full of United fans Saturday evening,
will have further alienated him from the masses and I for one have
no sympathy whatsoever and if anything, the article in the Chronicle
further emphasizes why his presence at the club is universally regarded
as an insult to those of us who pay his over-inflated wages.
The story, no doubt engineered to make the 'poor lad' look like the
'victim' in all this, has back-fired and spectacularly. It has stoked
up feelings that lay dormant, but never ever out of mind amongst genuine
Toon supporters who were, prior to the reports, prepared to live and
let live. Supporters who do not want him anywhere near a Black &
White shirt but were nonetheless willing to accept his presence in
one for the good of the team/club.
Since his refusal to play for Newcastle United (an act that played
a role in the dismissal of Sir Bobby - his very own "second father")
Dire has kept a low profile and knuckled down - putting in average
performances topped with a rare goal at Ewood Park. A run that just
about scraped into the acceptable column, even for his less than many
fans who think the sun shines from his arse.
To now read that this under performing waster who has blighted the
good name of our club not once, not twice but many a time since his
£6m move from Ipswich Town over 5-years ago, while delivering
little or nothing tangible out on the pitch, was left "close
to tears" by a a few loud mouth fans really does take the proverbial
biscuit. Oh what a crying shame, poor lickle Kierwan. The heart bleeds...
Not only is this the type of attitude to be expected from someone
who cares more about the riches of fame than the riches of the game
but is this the kind of attitude we need at the club? A petulant,
self-centered, flimsy little cry-baby who goes hiding when the bigger
lads start to pick on him? He ought to be ashamed of the article,
I'm sure some of the lads in the dressing room are pissing themselves
laughing...
I wonder whether he was close to tears when he pranged his expensive
motor, or when Sir Bobby bit the bullet. Or having to be dragged down
to the polis station for pissing in a street by his manager. Or being
besmirched all over the media for a certain incident in a certain
Hotel. Some how I seriously doubt it.
As for Saunders et.al who keep apologising on his behalf, hyping him
up beyond what he himself has achieved in the past and having the
audacity to then patronise supporters, wind your necks in, the club
means fuck all to you, it means everything to us.
Year after year we've had to put up with hot air, sound bites, pleas
for second chances, and all the "I'm a changed man" nonsense,
and now we are supposed to feel sorry for him? Because this is what
all of this is about, well enough is enough. We simply do not want
to know about how upsetting this has all been for Dire, what about
us? The mugs who pay his wages, the mugs who have to put up with all
the crap.
When will it all end? We are never going to see him fulfill that early
potential he once showed because he is an average footballer who's
only assets are his pace and energy... and even then he doesn't fully
know how to utilise them to his nor the team's benefit. What good
is his pace if he can't finish when breaking clear? What good is his
energy if it's misspent? His passing abilities are poor, his awareness
of others and decision making are also poor. In the centre he is too
lightweight and on the right he has a tendency to drift into the middle
leaving the right-flank exposed. Up front...ha! 23 goals in 5 years
says it all. On top of all that he's missed more games with various
injuries than he has played.
The pluses? He does work hard but for £40,000 plus per week,
that's not expected it's demanded and he once had a good game at right-back...
For me it ended the day he refused to wear the shirt, I don't want
him at the club nor in the team and I certainly don't want to read
about a millionaire's self inflicted emotional turmoil. You've made
your bed Kieron now lie in it... or better still, disappear, like
you do on the pitch and like that £17m plus you have cost in
wages and a transfer fee.
