Newcastle-Online comment: 18th June 2004
Paul
Gascoigne will once again pull on the black & white shirt of Newcastle
United with the former Toon star having been asked by Chairman Freddy
Shepherd to appear as a guest of honour in the Pre-Season Summer Tournament
at St. James' Park.
Gazza will appear in a United shirt against Rangers for 15 minutes
and he could also don the Glasgwegians shirt if Rangers boss Alex
McLeish agrees to it, but not against Newcastle.
Gazza speaking to the Chronicle said:
"I am absolutely thrilled at being asked to play for Newcastle
again. "But I accept that this competition is part of
serious pre-season preparations, not only for Newcastle but also for
Rangers, Feyenoord and Sporting Lisbon, and I don't want to get in
the way. "Ideally, I would love to play 15 minutes for
Newcastle against Rangers and then 15 minutes for Alex McLeish against
either Sporting Lisbon or Feyenoord. "My heart is already
racing at the prospect of wearing the black-and-white shirt again.
I would love to think I could play a one-two with my old England mate
Alan Shearer and send him in to score. "I was delighted
to be invited as guest of honour for the tournament - but to think
I might actually get on to the pitch has given me a real buzz.
