Buying From Our Premiership Rivals 2007: Middlesbrough
By James Collins On Wed 8 Aug 2007 |
According to Gareth Southgate, the fact that new Newcastle striker Alan Smith spoke to him is an ‘achievement.’ The fact that this was said merely a few months after signing Jonathan Woodgate suggests that over recent months, Middlesbrough have fallen behind other clubs in the transfer market.
Steve Gibson is one of the better chairman in the Premiership, but with the recent influx of wealth and ambition in other Premiership boardrooms, he just does not have the capabilities to compete. The loss of striker Mark Viduka will weaken the Boro attack more than it will reinforce the Newcastle attacking line-up, and the signing of the former Arsenal, Celtic, West Ham and Wolves flop as a replacement is completely mystifying, and reinforces the belief that Boro are unable to compete in the transfer market
Fortunately for the Smoggies, their youth system is currently producing enough half-decent players whom can plug the gaps of quality in their squad. Furthermore, new signings Luke Young and Sanli Tuncay may not propel Boro into the upper echelons of the league, but should be good enough to help the club retain it’s status a mediocre also-rans.
With renewed finances and ambition, it is likely that Newcastle could, excluding new signings, persuade any Boro player to sign if they really wanted to. The most talented old-hand playing for the Smoggies is without doubt Yakubu, but a move for the Nigerian must be ruled out as Newcastle already have four or five strikers of greater or equal ability. Likewise in midfield, it is hard to see how even Stewart Downing could get on the Newcastle bench.
Newcastle’s defence is also really starting to come together with the signings of Cacapa and Jose Enrique. However, there are still vacancies in this area. Luke Young may have been an improvement on Carr, but clearly the club can’t go bidding for players whom have just signed for another club. At left back, it must be considered that there is no cover for Jose Enrique whom is very much an unknown at the moment. With that in mind Andrew Taylor could be someone who could come in and offer some real competition. Although not the best player in the world, Taylor is young, uncompromising and possesses a good left foot, and would increase the depth of a squad belonging to a manager who is apparently keen on squad building.
The Newcastle squad is probably also missing an additional centre half. With the signings of Jose Enrique, Rozehnal and Cacapa, the Newcastle defence is lacking real Premiership experience. Clearly, a decently priced squad player with Premiership experience is hard to come by. However, Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott could be the solution. Again, not the best player in the world, but the former Derby man is steady and doesn’t make many mistakes. The presence of highly rated coach Steve Round could be to important to Newcastle if we show an interest, for the pair know each other very well from their Derby and Boro days.
Speaking of Steve Round, it is pleasing to see that Newcastle have employed the man considered as being the best young English coach in the country. The fact that Southgate lost such a good coach due to a difference of opinion, and the fact that he now sees nearly signing someone as an ‘achievement,’ the former England defender has to be considered as one of the favourites for victory in this year’s sack race.
How will Middlesbrough do this season? Which Boro players would you like to see at Newcastle? Have your say.

If Newcastle is such a ‘football hotbed’ how come they can’t produce England internationals like Middlesbrough which is a quarter of the size of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
Woodgate and Downing are England regulars and the Middlesbrough squad is full of young local talent.
Didn’t Sir john Hall want a team of 11 Geordies at Newcastle United?
He knew this was never going to happen and soon flew the nest.

mmm.. yeah as opposed to middlesbrough who are drowning in acalades..jesus, talk about the pot caling the kettle black. Don’t get me wrong, i like woodgate, i think he isn’t a bad player but he’s nowhere near in full fitness- he’s injured now isn’t he? let’s move on shall we…
wait one jolly second here you spent 7 mil on an ‘international’ defender, forgive me and my memory but hes harldy international; coming off the subs bench when one of the main players is injured doesnt count. i think hes only had 5 caps- most being in 99. so i guess 5.8 mil on a much younger goal-scoring passionate central midfielder, who might i add is also capped doent seem so bad.
funny you should mention joeys assault charges, but hey at least barton can behave himself at nightclubs

Teams that want to succeed? The difference between the four clubs you mentioned and the “Toon” is that they have succeeded and have pretty full trophy cabinets whereas your Intertoto cup is probably feeling a bit lonely.
I’m pretty certain that Woodgate’s “worst buy of the 21st century” award was based more on injuries than ability and given that he started 30 league games last season would indicate he’s getting back to full fitness. We spent £7m on an international central defender, you spent £5.8m on a guy who, if justice is done, will spend the next couple of seasons in jail.

Wow! A player named as La Liga’s worst buy of the 21st century signed for a club he had already spent a season with? Southgate must think it truly an honour… as for your geordie statment. Why don’t you go ahead and ask how many Man Utd players are from Manchester? Or what about Chelski players? Arsenal? Liverpool? See most unlike the smoggies, teams that want to succeed have broader scouting areas… wouldn’t be surprised if you lose Yak to Everton.. (but I hope you don’t)

You didn’t “buy” anyone from Boro, you got a lazy, overweight mercenary looking for a big pay day at the end of his career who’ll be lucky to start half of your games this season. You had a chance to sign Woodgate last season and he turned you down to play for his hometown club along with several other born and bred Teessiders. Remind me again how many Geordies actually play for Newcastle.

Stewart Downing is quality though I think Woodgate would be too risky and Taylor/Riggott a bit desperate. Weve had too many players who you could describe as ‘not the best in the world’. I think the old Keegan philosophy of only buying better than what we have already got should be the way forward.

If we were short of strikers - I’d say Yakubu. But we’re not. I wouldn’t mind if we signed Stewart Downing, but he doesn’t want to leave. If Woodgate wasn’t so injury prone - I’d have him too. That is all.

Damn website telling me my first comments were rejected. Now I almost look as big a tit as that guy from Boro.

Boro’s squad - Apart from Woodgate none of their players could improve their given position in our squad. Not worth looking at!
“John Walkker” - We are aware Boro had one of their rare finishes above Newcastle last season. We all saw the open top bus parade you lot had to celebrate! Is that 2 finishes above us in 15 years now? Well done!
Here’s’ some great quotes from Southgate to amuse us all from Sky-sports - What a big club they are!
————————————————-
Gareth Southgate feels it was an ‘achievement’ that Middlesbrough were close to signing Alan Smith. ”
And the Boro manager has gleaned encouragement from his club’s efforts to sign Smith as he looks to strengthen his squad before the start of the season.
“I spoke with him and we were in there right until the very end,” said Southgate in the Daily Mail.
“That was quite an achievement in that obviously we weren’t offering the same transfer package as other teams who fell by the wayside much earlier.
“But Alan felt his career opportunities were better at Newcastle.”

Pure class.

Yet again a purely innocently written article jumped upon by some numb fan who thinks we are going to pinch all their players. Keep them coming it is amazing how many people make them selves look stupid.

Boro havn’t got the players have they to keep up with Newcastle this season, but if i were pushed i’d agree with a Woodgate return. This guy must be kicking himself now! The only other player comes to mind is the Yak.. but we have enough quality in attack now even though strong rumour going round Martin’s is off to Real Madrid along with Kaka.

Only Woodgate would be welcome here by myself. But even he wouldn’t be top of my list for a CB to sign. His injuries are too much of a headache to risk him, especially since we’re a magnet for them.
Nathan Poritt, young left sided winger. 17 or so now, he’s going to be a star. In the Panorama “scandal” Chelsea and ourselves were credited with an interest. He’d be exactly what we should be looking for, what with Mort’s recent comments on capturing young talent from the local area and afar.

I wouldn’t like to see any Boro players at our place next season other than Woodgate. Apart from that they can keep them all. I’m sure Woodgate is regretting a move there and wishing ROeder had the nous to bring him to SJP.
