In The Know: Rumour Review - 28th May
By Parky On Mon 28 May 2007 |
Over the last week as Big Sam has swapped his mobile for a desk phone and as N.O. can reveal a longish conversation with Mr Ashley, the strained links of the two dozen or so players said to be targets is beginning to solidify. The white melting heat of the shock takeover and the raised hopes of the toon faithful is about to start seeing some product with regard to signatures which I hear will be coming thick and fast.
Perhaps even before Ben Haim, the Wigan left back Leighton Baines and a favourite of this writer will be signing for around £4-5m with added extras, it transpires that he was top of our aquisiton list all along and not the likes of Distin who after exploratory talks was rejected for his outlandish demands. I met a man in a dark alley and after the exchange of the Queens currency the secret words Curtis Davies were dropped like a whisper on my ear like a CIA secret at which point I asked for my money back. The £8m deal has been on the cards even before half the PL stepped in with offers of £15m (Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs) the main contenders, now that Portsmouth and West Ham are finding solutions or looking elsewhere. I don’t think at this time Curtis Davies is going to happen unless we double our offer.
Lareya Kingston a long time favourite of Mr Allardyce who has one of his special files on the player is a work in progress and this has even been brought to my attention by local Scottish papers, the dynamic, hard tackling and creative midfielder is a must have as far as Sam is concerned, but utimately deals struck with Russian clubs are an enigma wrapped in a puzzle. Talking of such things the silence from Nicolas is deafening, if you are reading this over your plat du jour Nico, go with your instincts and join the Toon revolution.
Although it is clear Parker is leaving for London, it is not so clear that Nigella is coming the other way, having has his head turned at the last minute by Arsenal, Everton and Seville. Everton? Yes, I know the giggle factor is high.
The other rumour I refuse at this point to take on-board is that there is renewed interest (€8m) from Bayern Munchen for Emre, there is nothing in the German press who take pleasure in analysing very closely all things Bavarian.
Saving the best thing for last and to catch the top and bottom readers of articles (like myself) I am confirming that one of Big Sam’s most trusted associates is hot on the trail regarding the availabiity of Jimmy Briand. Yes one of the most delicate and emerging flowers of French footie.
Keep singing in the rain.
Parkenstien.

parker is a good player and would be missed but its not the end of the world.I dont think he has the ability to play a blinder week in week out.his passings poor and he doesnt create or score when you need a midfielder to do both.ok his effort cant be faulted at times but you need more at this level.
i would quite happily like to see a better box to box player come here instead however no barton or reo coker please.someone like arteta or koumas.
dyer is another i would quite happily see leave for good money.never looks interested and is totally overated.
like to see

er…typing error: make that TOO one-footed! Ha!

I like Parker too, but I believe that Butt can play a similar role equally well. Plus…I don’t know…Parker just didn’t seem to gel well with whoever we played him with last season. Personally, if we keep him then great and if we sell him then that’s also great.
The only other two I’d like to see us sell are Carr, and Dyer if it’s the right price. Otherwise, keep him.
I’d love to see Arteta come to the Toon instead, and would even offer Dyer plus cash.
Sam could get a lot out of Emre, who is potentially a fine player but two one-footed. Players who can only use their left foot irritate me because they can lose possession or miss a vital pass. Or get injured trying to twist onto their favoured foot. But I’d like to see Emre fit and at his best.
On blogonthetyne the transfer talk is bloody crazy: I doubt it’ll be a case of 4 more out and 7 in. It’s not just about personnel but what Sam can get out of what we have, including the likes of Carroll, Troisi, Edgar, Lua Lua etc. We might as well just relax and be patient over who comes in. I’m worse than most for checking Toon sites every few hours but we should just let it all unfold in its own time.

I agree with archie.. thanks to fans like ‘lee g’ the man who literally held the team together last season is off to london- at least this time its legal.
“most overrated player ever”? I dont know what you’re sniffing man. i dont see how scott is over rated (look at your beckhams and cristianos) he’s had an injury blighted season, and if you ask me he was the best english player last year; giving his all in every game. yet now after one season, after all hes done, he puts in a few bad perdformances n he gets booed off? no wonder he wants leave, jesus give him a break lads.
i had so much hope for this season, n im not saying we cant still make europe, bt him being sold has really soured the mood.

I dont know how you guys have so much time to sit around discussing speculation? You must have really boring lives.
Me? I’m on the sick - that’s my excuse.
It would appear not to be speculation that Parker is going.
So for all you tossers who booed him last season for not giving his all, you must be really proud of yourselves.
Why would he want to leave? Can’t be the money.
Why would he want to go back to London? Could it be possible that he didn’t want to stay where he wasnt appreciated?
As has been said below, Parker has been without a doubt our most consistent player. At times his game dropped to that of a mere mortal, but how could any Toon fan slag off someone who put that much work into a game of football.
I was as excited as anyone that Allardyce got the job, but if the speculation is true and Parker’s on his way out with Barton and Viduka coming in I can only surmise that Big Sam overdid it on the Red when he was in France.

first of all.. thers no way lamps’ll move 2 the north east n i agree barton’s good palyer bt hes a crazy bastard! i’d like 2 see him come though, we need more determined players n 1s with pasion. u no like parker who, i think, has already bin sod..thts a bad move sam. o n while we’r talking abt tranfers.. crouch would be a gd target bt the git wants 2 stay in a liverpool side tht obviously thinks its 2 big 4 its boots.
since every1s saying it.. howay the lads

I hope that Sam DOES KNOW what he is doing, I am already leaning away from my “let’s see what he does” view to “I don’t want to be a bigger Bolton” concern.
Parker is clearly one of those that has not been up for it for sometime - since Sheff Utd home in fact. Always got stuck in but consistently winning back the ball he had just lost, and doing his infuriating circles rather than making space or giving the easy pass. He was found out by the crowd against Sheff Utd (along with Carr) and couldn’t handle the pressure. Viduka has no glowing track record at any club. He always comes to life at the end of a season which has been punctuated by spells of “injury” and always returning from them a little on the hefty side. £40,000 Boro want to give him but we always compete on wages ! He has the ability, it’s getting him fit in the athletic sense and then playing well regularly that concerns me.
Next up is the Barton rumour. I don’t want that little thug anywhere near my club. I thought of not renewing if he joins but why should I be driven from my club while he picks up big money ? His memories he has left behind amongst teammates at Man City should worry all players current and prospective, not forgetting his disciplinary record on the pitch. If Sam gambles on him it best be right as that signing has shortened my tolerance of him to shorter than the end of the season (I wanted to give him 2 to show his building of the club). Which is showing commitment v the mackems ? getting stuck in and a red card or getting stuck in within the rules of the game and either scoring a winner or setting it up ?
Ben Haim is a yes if we can get him, no to Anelka, yes to Baines, no to Anelka or Davies but yes to Nolan if he really wants him. Cheap young imports I can stomach, old past it’s no because I want him to build us a team and club. Bolton were a revolving door club, we must get a sound core first, improve and then start to run when we are walking. Ashleys millions could help but superstar names because we can will not build that team/club/future we all know as supporters we deserve.

the defenders all need to go and keep Taylor and bring new ones in. go for lampard
Sent in on: May 31st, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Besides.. 8.5 mil, is that it?. If Carrick is worth 18 mil, then surely parker must be worth at least 12 (i personally think parker is a much better player than carrick). well maybe if we made parker feel a little more welcome he wouldnt want to leave so bad- which i doubt, i mean bloody hell y would he want to leave, hes the captain. n hed be an idiot to move to a team like west ham.

I wouldn’t get in the way of letting Parker go but if we are gonna have Barton as a replacement then I think thats a bad move unless Sam can fix his awful attitude.
I’ve seen some really bad tackle attempts from him in the past, expect a few reds and big bans if he comes here.

He wants to go back to London.
Sent in on: May 31st, 2007 at 5:44 pm
It’s a joke if we sell Parker, he’s one of the best platers. We need to get rid of most of the other players and he’s one that we need to keep. He tries his best every game and if most of the other players tried as much as him we wouldn’t be where we are now. If we get Barton instead thats also bad as he will disrupt the players.
Haway Sam man we need to keep out good players no sell them!!

Andy s
HE DOESN’T LIKE IT HERE.
There is no point keeping a player who wants to move back to a London Club and as the last few days have shown, Curbs wants him at West Ham. Good luck to him.
Sent in on: May 31st, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Right why is Parker being linked with a move away!? I thought to increase the talent in the squad we must get rid of our useless players not one of the fucking best! I would rather Parker than 9 million at Newcastle cos whats 9 mil goiing to be to this new guy anyways!! Howy the Lads
Sent in on: May 31st, 2007 at 11:38 am
sell parker? I’d be really disappointed if we let him go, he was a revelation last season (05-06) a real rock who always put in a solid heart-felt shift for the toon. i remeber the match where he continued playing even though he looked 2 have had a concussion… a true player. so what if this season hes been anything less than spectacular, hes had injury problems, n i dnt think anybody played particularly well this season anyway. so cmon if luque deserves a chance (haha thts debatable) then surely scotty desrves too.

I wouldn’t like to see Anelka come here, unless Owen stayed. Baines, Ben Haim will be good signings, however, I would love to see Emre stay as well as Martins. I do have it on good authority that Parker will be at Tottenham next season.

“Although it is clear Parker is leaving for London, it is not so clear that Nigella is coming the other way, having has his head turned at the last minute by Everton and Seville. Everton? Yes, I know the giggle factor is high”
Intresting remark..so how many places below Newcastle did Everton finish the season ?? and just remind me again what have Newcastle won in the last 38 years ?? Certinally not 3 League Championships, 3 FA Cups and the Cup Winners Cup !!

agreed to someones statement below, some of the names touted about are good players Baines is my favorite but tbh until its officialy announced that they have signed i wont hold my breath and will continue to expect the sames players we got now at sjp next season
Sent in on: May 28th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Interesting possibilities, all of them. I’m not sure about Anelka. I like players who don’t keep jumping from one club to another, but as long as Sam is with us (which hopefully will be a successful, long time and not cut short as rumours have it) then I suppose Anelka could be a real asset.
I would love to see Crouch at the Toon though. I wasn’t at all sure why Liverpool bought him at the time, but I reckon he’s been a class act for them - and has the right attitude. A forward line choice of Crouch, Owen and Martins would be great, with Amoebi and Carroll on the fringes. I’d only play two forwards at a time, though.
I want Owen to stay IF he wants to stay.
Parker? Well, he is very much a Sam kind of player, and I do rate him, But somehow Parker seems to hold us back rather than making us more successful. He can be a very effective defensive mf, but we need mf players who contribute equally to attack and who score more.
I hope that, if he does take over, that Ashton is patient with his ambitions. I’m sure that many other clubs, with good squads and a rich history, would love to break into the top 4. It’s not possible for them all to do so and I’d personally be happy to see us around 7th by the end of the season, but playing quality football again.
Anyways, at least things don’t feel stagnant at the Toon anymore!

HTL,
The stickman is my biggest fear too.
Sent in on: May 28th, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Not disparaging your connections but I’m not holding my breath on any signing until I see them paraded @ SJP. Too many rumours & heard them all before. I’m still optimistic about Sam, Ashley and next season but please not the Stickman… HTL

Good story, I like the contrast between tired media speculation, wishful thinking with a hint of the “worked with before theory” and a touch of random footballer linkage.
Next week we should have some sort of who dunnit to really get us on the edge of our seats.
Sent in on: May 28th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
He’s talking about Nicholas Anelka, who would be a fantastic signing for us if Martins/Owen or both of them aren’t here come August.
Baines and Ben Haim would be a great start to the defensive rebuilding, but we’d still need at least one more centre-half to be adequately-stocked in that area.
If Ben Haim is coming and will get first-team football, what sort of defender do we go for? Would the likes of Sol Campbell come here to battle for a place when he’s an automatic starter at Fratton Park? What happens to Steven Taylor?
It’s going to be interesting, if nothing else.
Sent in on: May 28th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Am I being totally dumb; who is the Nicholas you refer to in the third paragraph?
Happy with the rest though, especially the defenders!
