Big Sam Anyone? Vote & Discuss
By N.O On Fri 4 May 2007 |
With Big Sam Allardyce being linked with Glenn Roeder’s job here at United on a daily basis by all and sundry, we thought we’d get YOUR views on the matter so use the poll to your right to vote on the topic and of course, write in using the comment form to share your views and have your say.

the problem at newcastle is that we have a different manger every few years. theres no continuity, and i also feel that some of the players didnt put their ‘all’ into some of the matches anyway.
however, i am undecided as to weather sam is the best man for newcastle, i dont think his style of playing will suit newcastle’s style of playing.however he might just be the ‘kick up the arse’ the team needs. at the moment id prefer to see sven as manager then sam
we definitly need some one long term, who can rebuild the team and get the motivation back (and win the fans over!) we belong in the top 6 of the table, not the bottom 6!!!

Sam Allardyce it has got to be. Evryone says they wont like his style of football he wil bring with him wot a load of rubbish. He had to play tht sometimes at bolton beacuse thats what got the best out of his players . he didnt always play the long ball but when he did it got him results. I think at newcastle he wil show he is a great manager and the right man for the job and witha bit of money we can get a top six finish next season

COME OFF IT STAN!
big sam is a winner?
he has won nothing at bolton, the nearest being a defeat by the smoggies in the coca cola cup final.
you say it yourself … they play unattractive football. well we don’t want to see long ball tactics.
look at svens record at club level and ignore the press about england as he only lost 4 games and was second only behind ramsey for results.
sven could be the answer and would be my choice.
FREDDY … LISTEN TO THE FANS FOR A CHANGE AND DON’T MAKE A MESS OF THIS ONE, YOU WON’T GET ANOTHER CHANCE

I’ve watched Bolton quite a bit and they are more John Barnes (get round the back) than hoof it upfield like every one says. They play decent football. I also think our injury problems would dry up with Sam and his ‘fitness’regime.
Bring him in I say :-p

Interesting to see some of the names that crop up when you are talking about nominating managers for the TOON.
Roy Keane hasn’t even been manager for a year and he’s alredy being peddled.
We’ve had the usual round of Hiddink and Hitzfeld but several articles I’ve read today are telling us to steer clear of one bloke in particular, who has immaculate credentials.
First of all managing a country and managing a league team are totally different. If you’re managing the Dutch National squad you cant go out and buy a French prodigee for next to nothing.
Different rules altogether.
So we need a manager who has achieved at various levels and consistently brings home the silverware.
So how about 12 National trophies in 3 different countries and 4 European finals?
Only SBR comes close.
I am of course referring to that greedy Swedish git Uncle Sven.
Discount his England debacle (during which he only lost 4 competitive matches) and you have a top class manager with a stunning record - and he’s a major league totty hunter, which can only elevate his status in my book.
We keep talking about what’s available locally - Mark Hughes? Roy Keane? Please.
How the hell are we going to get anywhere if we don’t think big.
So what do you think?
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
to be honest i wouldnt mind big sam coming in coz if we look at his record he has led bolton to europe again and again but on the other hand i dont think his style is attractive and we as fans would hate that
and do we really stand a chance of getting hiddunk or scoleri or mourinho?
therefore there r only 3 decent managers dt we would get a chance of pulling
- roy keane…but he wont come coz hes at sunderland
- david moyes…he has got a good record at everton on a low budget and motivation
- and finally this is the 1 i want - MARK HUGHES…now he is going to be a great manager…i would give im a high salary and give him 4 years at newcastle to change the team around

I dont think Newcastle can attract good manager’s. freddy will get another has been or unproven manager. why do we talk about this every 2 years, its always the same thing every time,Its the manager fault lets sack him. Get RID of fs

Roeder back to the academy where he did a good job and Allardyce in his place. I’ll be sad to see him go, but he is not/no longer able to inspire. I would like to see Guus Hiddink more than anyone…

If shepherd does actually care about newcastle he will sack Glen’im not making any excuses BUT;’ Roeder and do all he can to get someone of the credentials that allardyce has. For me Sam Allardyce has newcastle united manager written all over him. Yes i too would love the likes of hiddink and hitzfeld to manage newcastle but at this point in time i cant see that there is a better man for the job than big sam. I base my opinions on the fact that 1. the big name players are no longer motivated to play for the club, 2. our defence is about as solid as playdoe, and finally 3. we need new players, but dont have a lot of money to do it with. All of the three points i have made are Allardyce’s specialties. So for me bring in Big Sam.

People talk about Bolton bullying teams off the pitch and playing unattractive football. Do Chelsea and Liverpool play attractive football? No - Get in the real world people - Give the job to Allardyce and give the power to sort out this rotten mess of a club from the youth team to the first -He’s a winner and if that means bullying teams into submission then all well and good.
Alardyce in - YES YES YES

IF we do go for Big Sam, we should do it wholeheartedly. As GR said, all successful clubs give their managers a long time at the club. So we should see it as a long project.
I really do believe GR has done some very good things this season: easing young players in from the shadows - such as Carroll - and bringing back Butt and Milner (not everyone’s favourite player, I know, and not the finished article yet, but always lively and has some great moments in many games…and he’s a damn sight better than Luque - in the UK at least).
GR also baffles though. Remember Mourinho saying a few months ago “there is no such thing as old players, just good”? That’s an exaggeration, of course, but it wouldn’t hurt at all having Campbell and Hyppia in the squad and would probably do us a lot of good for a couple of years while we phase younger players in.
And I don’t believe that GR can inspire our best players to play to their potential, by any means, even though I like GR.
So back to Big Sam. I’m not entirely sure, but I think he might be a suceess. Though the best managers at SJP have been exhuberant personalities, like KK and Sir Bobby. I’d ideally like to see us get someone like that in. Characters like those probably aren’t around, so possibly a team of, say, Houllier as manager, and Thompson and McDermott as assistants could work (all Scousers!!). Or Shearer as assistant.
Anyway, I still hope GR succeeds. I can’t quite see it at this stage, and we need to improve dramatically on the Reading game but I still have an ounce of hope.

If you knew that the person knocking on your door asking to babysit your kids had been convicted of child molesting 3 times, would you ask them in, give them the job and expect everything to turn out hunky dory?
No?
So why the hell would you give your football team to a Manager who failed, not marginally, but drastically in his last 3 jobs as a Manager?
Don’t we we want our baby in safe hands?
I would take a guess and say that even the most die hard fans are starting to tire of Roeder. He isn’t receiving the plaudits we expected(The Roeder Clap, as the Chinese might say)
Which means that the 90% of you out there who were jumping up and down with excited little smiles on your faces a year ago, must be feeling pretty sick just now.
As I and many others pointed out at the time Roeder’s previous record made his full time appointment a joke, second only to McClaren getting the England job.
There is very little that compares to that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you can turn around and say “Told You So!”, knowing that there isn’t a reasonable counter arguement out there that can be thrown back at you.
Now we need a proven manager to get us back up there.
While i have to respect their international records Hiddink and Hitzfeld wouldn’t know the premiere league if it slapped them in the face (which could easily happen if Taylor’s playing).
We don’t need the Curbishleys, Colemans (Colemen?) and Pardews of this world.
Alladyce’s record is pretty impressive whether it’s Limerick, Preston, Blackpool, Notts County or Bolton.
His record is pretty much the opposite of Roeders, who despite his earlier dignified stance seems pretty insistent on telling everyone about our injury problems.
The statement that any team in the league would have missed Owen and Ameobi, just shows that he’s spending too much time rolling his own.
Owen yes, but any team in the league would miss Ameobi?
Glenn, If you have had any offers for Shola - take them. You’ve heard of a Bosman? Send him to Portsmouth on a “Kellogs”. That’s where you buy Bramble, open the box and find a free Shola inside.
For Christs sake we replaced him with Sibierski who couldn’t get a game with Man City, and Sib is streets better.
Remeber Ameobi telling us he’s a 20 a season man?
Then we get Overpayme Martins - who is actually a 20 a season man.
No comparison.
Shola’s living in the past.
Remember Wham?
For George Michael Think Lua Lua. For Andrew Ridgley think Shola.
Since Wham broke up what has Ridgley done, apart from smash up the odd Renault 5 Turbo?
The point is not to slag off the bad players - it’s to question the manager who persistently sticks with them, thinking that they’re good enough for a team with top 5 aspirations.
Allardyce makes things happen with what he’s got. There was no huge transfer kitty at Bolton - he took old boys and misfits and used their strengths, which is something we could certainly do with.
It was Sam who took the hard game to Arsenal and Chelsea and got results.
I doubt if Sam would have let Freddy go through last summer and this Christmas without shoring up the defence.
MAybe Sam might have even been able to rescue the 3 Bumbling Bees (Boumsong, Babayarro and Bramble).
Roeder is not the man for the Job.
Even with the injuries, some of the performances we turned out during the season with the talent we had available were disgraceful, all brought about by Roeders limited tactical ability.
If he’d had any decency at all he’d have fallen on his sword after Birmingham arse-holed us in the FA Cup.
Sam has a good record. He didn’t always play “hit and Run”, but he always did well.
Now that Shearer has gone we need to get away from playing hit the Target Man - mainly because we dont have one.
Even if it costs 5 million in compensation (4 to Bolton, 1 to Roeder) finishing 5th instead of 13th will make it all worthwhile.
Yes Sam’s a bigheaded bastard, but so are Mourinho and Ferguson and Jol, and so was Cloughie.
Strange thing about bigheads - they are normally bloody good at what they do.
Of course we could stick with our mild mannered, demure Ann Robinson look-a-like, and I have no doubt the fat controller would love that - makes his life much easier - but where would we be in 2 years time?
Probably sharing a ground with Blyth Spartans.
Give Sam the Keys to the Office, and give Shola the keys to the bus.
Glenn Roeder, You are the weakest link……

I fear the future of Mr. Roeder, may already have been decided.
Check this link
http://www.nufc-finances.org.uk/20071.htm
With the absence of any European money next season, the club needs to put as many arses on seats as possible. This means selling as many season tickets as possible. Let us not forget that the loan repayment for previous stadium redevelopment is dependant on ticket sales. Like it or not unless something drastic happens between now and renewal time i.e. huge name signing (Shepherd’s fond of that one) ST uptake will be down on previous seasons. Worst case scenario being that the club will not be able to fulfill its repayment obligations from ticket sales alone and will be forced to find money from elsewhere in order to make the repayments.
If Roeder’s still in charge next season I think we will struggle to sell tickets on a match to match basis let alone be able to persuade the ST undecided to renew. Lets face it nothing motivates old Pie Face into action more than the threat of losing cash. I suspect he’s sharpening his axe right now.

A couple of weeks ago I watched Bolton play Villa and have to say that I was very impressed with the quality of Boltons football. I think its a misconception that Bolton play are simply long ball merchants. What is certain is that we’re going nowhere under Roeder, nice bloke he may be. He is clearly out of his depth and Sam might well be the breath of fresh air the club needs.

although i hate sam allardyce, im assuming he played boring football due to lack of budget, in that case, i would give him a chance as manager, and if he doesn’t play exciting stuff, at least we’ll win a few games
he can’t be any worse than roeder, and i’d like to see if he could get the very best out of oba
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 10:09 am
Just a point to Jon on the youth point youre making. Have you forgot about the way Milner was treated at the start of the season? The way NZogbia’s been pushed into the shadows by a player who we didnt need and who every game this season has been nowhere near as good as NZogbia was last season. The way we let Michael Chopra go? The way we said we wanted young players last season a moved out of the Sol Campbell race but now Roeders saying he wants experience! He doesnt know what he wants quite obviously. The way that out of all of the youth players this season David Edgar has been the best, but Huntington gets the nod, and finally that the only reason these youth players have been playing is because of our injury crisis, almost the same as the one under souness. Once is bad luck, twice is bad fitness coaching.

A few years back if we were asking this when SBR was sacked I would have took a stab at almost everyone saying ‘fuck no’, but taking the current mismanagement of our club at almost every level into consideration, at the moment I’d say yes. Bolton are’nt the cliche ‘long ball’ team that 10 minutes on match of the day shows them to be, theyre a good team with a good manager who gets the best out of players that you would think are past their best or have been problematic at other clubs. Allardyce has over-achieved with Bolton and I think he can do a good job for us IF he’s allowed to put into place the things he should be able to with a club this size. By that I mean the fitness of players through their lifestyle, food etc and a change in coaching personnel. It might seem backward to once again start the team with another manager but with the current tactical ineptitude, bad player management and embarassing manager in place, I dont see a better alternative short of a take over.

Ross G, I couldn’t agree more, I thought I was the only one that felt this way! ‘Big Sam’ is a big headed ****** and gets success by bullying other teams off the pitch! I’m not Roeders biggest fan but it can at least be said that he is repairing the club off the field if not on it, by improving the youth system and putting in place a world class scouting network, things that NUFC have needed badly for a LONG time! Allardyce would most likely turn us into a talentless bullyboy team like Bolton and I for one do not want to see Newcastle go that way! Big Sam - NO, NO, NO!
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 8:10 am
- Roeder has one year left on his contract, therefore would cost a lot in compensation as i do not invisage he is on much
- Results have been poor, poorer actually once the injured players started coming back which suggests Roeder cannot motivate big name players.
- Big Sam deserves his chance at a big club. Remember the only reason he didnt get the england job was because of the transfer irregulrities. The board thought his interview and presentation were by far the best
- Big Sams main gift is his ability to motivate and get the best out of players who dont seem to play for the love of the game, more the luxuries it brings.
- Big Sams record in the transfer market is 2nd to none. Shepherd would know his money is in safe hands.
- Big Sams teams play with a style that suits his teams.
Big Sam is exactly what we need to get us where we should be Top 5.
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 7:54 am
I think we should have got big sam in as soon as he left bolton. He is a motivational inspiration to his players and was the first manager in football as far as I can tell, to use set pieces in a propper effective way. He gets players in the wrong end of there 30’s! do you really think that will be the case at Newcastle? Roeder is a tactical mess with the same motivational skills as a sloth wanting to do the 10,000 meters.
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 6:33 am
i dont want to see big sam or roeder at newcastle. i agree with lee that we should get luis van gaal. he is a quality manager and i think would love to prove himself in the premiership with us. he knows about good players in europe unlike roeder. i can see roeder buying 2 midfielders and a winger this summer and a free transfer defender who cant believe his luck. bring back sir bobby with big al!

I just hate the excuse… Owen was injured, no one should be suprised with our postion
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 12:32 am
Right now i would rather have My dog, Sparky, manage Newcastle United than Glenn Roeder. He doesn’t have a lot of tactical awareness, motivational or man management skills, doesn’t understand why you shouldn’t constantly punt long balls up field to a midget striker or have a clue about formations, strategy or counter strategy, but that’s probably more than Roeder knows!! Luis Van Gaal took the reigns at AZ Alkmaar about the same time Roeder fell on his feet at Newcastle, he rebuilt the entire squad for about the same ammount Newcastle paid for Martins. They’re flying high in the Dutch league, have passion, confidence, ability, self belief, actually look as though they enjoy playing football, and are generally regarded as the most attractive football playing team in the Dutch league. Newcastle are ….erm…rubbish., and it’s not as if we have bad players. Most managers would love to have the likes of Owen, N’Zogbia, Emre, Martins, Dyer, Butt etc..etc.. in their squad, but these players just aren’t performing for Roeder and no matter how high the calibre of player we bring in, the results and performances will be no better. He simply isn’t a motivator of men. How can the players know what they’re supposed to be doing when the manager doesn’t know himself? I say bring in Big Sam. We don’t even need to give him a massive transfer kitty, barring the addition of a new back line, lets see what he can do with what’s there. I bet the performances will be unrecognizable from the dross being dished up under Roeder!

Do i want Allardyce as manager of Newcastle United?
GOOD GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. His brand of football is disgusting and unpleasing on the eye. Hoof the ball up field and fight for the scraps and hopefully score. Get out of town. I will be extremely angry if he is appointed manager.
2. What has he ever won with Bolton? He’s certainly had more time there than Roeder has had with us, so we should give Roeder at least another year or two.
3. I don’t see any young players coming up at Bolton and breaking into their first team. So not sure he’d care much about developing our promising youngsters from the academy.
4. I don’t want the whole team to be full of 30 yr olds.
5. He was offered the Newcastle job in the past and decided not to take it, am I right????
Ultimately Big Sam’s brand of football will not be appreciated. In addition we can’t continue to change manager every year or two, it will scare good managers away from the job knowing that they’ll be sacked within two years.
Sent in on: May 5th, 2007 at 12:01 am
I’d have Big Sam.
I’m sure the fans wouldn’t welcome him for Bolton’s style of football but if he came here and played decent attacking football and did well and got us in the top 6 they’d be won over.
You always get a hard game against Bolton, how often can you say that about us, especially away from home.
Sent in on: May 4th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
He was a success at the other Magpies, Notts County - leading them to the Division 3 title in his first season - so he has seen a black and white striped kit win silverware. I wouldn’t bet against him doing so again, should he take over. My first choice would’ve been to go European - and Hitzfeld all the way. I realise how much the mighty have fallen though, and as such that calibre of manager is no longer a viable option. Allardyce certainly is the best of the ones NUFC can attract - and Bolton have improved every single season he has been there. Can’t ask for better than that. I can’t think of the last flop signing he made to be honest. He has tamed El Hadji Diouf and Anelka - our bad boys pale in to comparison - Dyer would be no problem. Only worry would be his liking for old players - although he has just signed to extremely highly rated Swiss youngsters for Bolton, to join from next season, beating a host of clubs to do so. Perhaps the old brigade is due to lack of funds. And if you’re good enough, who cares if you’re old?! I would have rather have had Speed and Campbell and the like this season than younger guys like Bramble. Let’s hope he joins, and if he gets rid of Carr, Babayaro, Bramble, Gooch, Moore, and buys a whole new defence - Ben Haim, Baines/Bridge/Bale, Campbell, Coloccini, Sidwell, and a target man striker - a Klose type (I know Klose wouldn’t come!) then a better season should be in store. He is one who is able to get instant resukts - Bolton reached play off final, cup semis in his first season.

No,no,no why cant we bring in a manager with actual quality background and success in past and recent times. Big Sam as he calls himself is Big headed, and will make our football style the same boring way Bolton do. It may get us some results but we dont have the 8ft oafs they have we have a small team that actually play football instead of kicking lumps out of each other. Even though Im not really happy with Roeder, I totally agree with his policy for two reasons. 1. he is targeting the defence as the MAIN priority. and 2. just as importantly he wants to invest in young players, reminding me of the Bobby days when we were actually goin somewhere, and Tottenham took over and look what happened. I fear if Sam has the job we will end up with a average age of +30. He would sell martins and owen to bring in Viduka and Kevin Davies. I think unless we can get a manager of quality like Hiddink, Hitsfeld, etc then we should give Roeder next year with the backing of at least £15m. And will someone get Alan Shearer tied to the club as an ambassador to help bring in some talent as well as nurture Caroll. Oh and the trip to Argentina better bring some quality players back as we would be stupid to do our usual stance of maybe in a couple of years so there bloody price sky rockets or Real freakin Madrid buy them to play in the 8th reserve team!!!!

tbh i do not like fat sam that much ,his football gets results more than not.his football is not that exciting to watch .just a doubt that i have ,maybe with a bigger transfer budget he could be more attack minded but hey who are we to complain with mr motivator incharge
