I think we need a good clear out. Many are either always injured or not good enough. I would love to see Taylor and Edgar become a central partnership as player's i think they are both streets ahead of the other young un's like Ramage and Huntington who look more like back up, not to mention Carr and Babayaro. Edgar, Canadian player of the year, will also be getting plenty of international experience this year in Canada and has been earmarked as being in the Canadian line up in the next World Cup !! With kids like these at the club things shouldnt seem so glum !!

Looking at the team we should have available next season:

Strikers: Martins, Owen, Shola, Sibierski and Dyer all more than capable of playing upfront. Plus possibly Duff

Left wing: Duff and Zoggy, both are far more cabable than we've really seen this season

Right wing: Milners made this position his own but Nobby is more than adequate as back up

Central midfield: Parker, Butt, Emre and Dyer. Butts been outstanding, Emre flatters to decieve, Dyer is too lightweight. And parker cant seem to forge a decent partnership with anyone

Left back: Babayaro (I expect Bernard to go). Too injury prone

Right back: Nobby and Carr. Nobby has been class at right back but Carr is still a liability

Centre back: Taylor, Bramble, Ramage, Huntingdon, Edgar (plus Gooch & Moore out)

Goalies: Given, Harper & Krull. Enough said

Id be targetting the following in order of priority:
1. Left back (bale, barnes, bridge?)
2. Versitile defender (Ben Haim, Distan?)
3. Central midfield

Is Oliver Bernard out indefinitely?
Back when Sir Bobby Robson was around he had a few good years. Is there any potential left?

I’ve always thought that Shola should only ever be considered a number 4 striker at any top Premiership team, this is despite the fact I think he's decent player but I still think he's destined to spend the rest of his career in squad limbo-land i.e. too good to be a fringe player yet not good enough to be an ever-present number 9. Furthermore, I'd certainly like to see Dean Ashton arrive in the pre-season and I think there's a good chance that he will. I think he would give us a nice mix up-front and a healthy pool of strikers alongside Owen and Martins.

Nobby has another good season at right back ahead of him and that would give us some time to look for a talented youngster to eventually replace him. Carr needs to go, Moore will probably return down-under and Babayaro is a reserve left back at best. Bridge and Woodgate would be great additions but I can't see both coming to Newcastle. One of them might but I stress the word ‘might’ so I think the club better start looking for alternative options. I'm still slightly annoyed/confused as to why we didn’t sign Sol Campbell when we had the chance as he has a great pedigree and he's certainly done the business down at Pompey. I can’t really see a future role for Ramage other than as a floating reserve defender although I rate Edgar from what I’ve seen, more so than his peer Huntington. Taylor is a reliable-ish first-teamer and he should get better as he gets more games under his belt and rather controversially, I still think there’s a place for Bramble at the club. Oguchi will hopefully be a good signing but please, no Anton Ferdinand!

The midfield is fine, although if Emre goes then someone will have to come in to replace him. Reo-Coker seems like the popular choice at the moment and I’d be happy with that. I sincerely hope Duff gets his form back and Milner’s consistency continues.

Shay/Harper/Krul are as good a goalkeeping trio as you could possibly expect to find at a Premiership club so no tinkering required in that department.

Therefore, Newcastle really do have the nucleus of a very good squad, I think that's clear for everybody to see and perhaps one (of many) reasons why it’s easy to get frustrated supporting the club as they seem to be perpetually ‘not quite there yet’. I’ve been feeling fairly optimistic of late as to how we’ll finish this season I think Roeder’s done a great job under the circumstances and he needs a few seasons to get things going again although I wouldn’t be too disheartened if next season was another consolidation season.

How many extra points would we have if we’d had a sensible amount of injuries? 10? 12? Who knows, but we’re doing ok all things considered and I think he deserves a lot of credit. It’s easy to draw comparisons with Sir Bobby in the respect that he had a rescue season, a consolidation season, then 3 successful seasons. I can see the same thing happening with Roeder. I hope he’s given the opportunity to prove me right.

Just looking at the end of season run in…it’s a tricky one… but I think we’ll end up with about 55 points and that will be good for 7th or 8th. I’m avoiding thinking too much about how far we’ll progress in the UEFA cup as I don’t want to get myself excited for nothing.

Totally agree, carr is a waster, nobby is solid at right back so stick with him, also he has passion to play for the club.

Left back is a problem though, babayaro isn't good enough, hunty in my opinion has unbelievable potential at only 19, but i would prefer to see a natural lefty at left back, wayne bridge would be a great buy also wouldnt complain with seeing leighton baines of wigan there next season.

Many people may disagree with me but if gooch signs permanently i dont see centre back as a problem area, this is because taylor in my opinion is international quality and will be for many years to come, and with the above two first choice you have potentially quality youth players in reserve such as edgar and hunty, plus moore, ramage and bramble as other reserves.

I think we could do with another playmaker/attacking midfielder because with all the recent allegations i dont think emre will be with us for much longer, also this player can be used for cover for dyer, who has as much chance of playing 40 games a season as the queen.

With the right buys in the right areas, and keeping injury free i think newcastle have the capability to make a genuine top 5 push for next season.

Fullbacks are a necessity.

At right back, we have a natural however, Solano doing more in 6 months than Carr did in 3 miserable years at the club.

Left back though...

How many different players have played there this season? At least 5 have filled the role.

Wayne Bridge is my choice, he won't be picked ahead of Ashley Cole, even IF he plays well

Centre Backs

Onyewu has done well, and apparently we've agreed to buy him if he continues doing well, so we might not need Moore to stay.
