Job Done
After all the shenanigans of the last week, it was almost easy to
forget that there was still a bit of football to be played this season.
Coventry City were the visitors, as they arrived at St. James' Park
for the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Stephen Carr was back from injury, and Patrick Kluivert was back in
the starting lineup. New boy Amdy Faye was making his debut in the
Magpie midfield.
Newcastle started in lively fashion, zipping the ball around confidently,
and not allowing Coventry to settle.
Overawed
The Sky Blues were looking overawed and nervous by the three-pronged
attack of Shearer, Kluivert and Ameobi. Steele was forced into a good
save early on, and Kluivert put a volley over.
Amdy Faye was looking the part, demanding his team mates pass him
the ball, always looking to break up attacks and start others.
Some excellent work from Dyer saw him cross the ball to Jenas, whose
header forced Steele into another save. Good goalkeeping, but Jenas
should have done better.
Another chance was created again by Dyer after 22 minutes, but this
time it was Kluivert who couldn't apply the finish.
Classic Shearer
Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock when Jermaine Jenas burst
from the left and put the ball inside to Alan Shearer. The Newcastle
captain took one touch, and then drilled it into the bottom-left corner.
A classic Shearer goal.
Minutes later, Ameobi made it two, with a fantastic solo effort, rifling
in a shot in from 18 yards. It was the least that Newcastle's possession
deserved, but the joy did not last long as Coventry pulled a goal
back on the stroke of half time with an Adebola header that sailed
over Harper.
Newcastle refused to let the Coventry goal unsettle them after the
break. A Dyer run from midfield saw him flash the ball across goal,
skimming the far post.
Wicked deflection
Celestine Babayaro then scored his first goal for Newcastle, breaking
two weak challenges to get himself into the box. His shot took a wicked
deflection, and found its way into the back of the net. The celebrations
had shades of LuaLua, as the crowd went wild.
Newcastle nearly scored a fourth, when Patrick Kluivert headed against
the bar, though he really should have scored. Good work from Dyer
and Shearer to set him up.
Shearer almost got his second after Dyer put him through, but his
shot flashed wide. There was only one team in it at the moment. Kluivert
was the next to test the keeper, but his shot on 75 minutes was straight
at the keeper.
Coventry had a rare chance when a Stern John header went over, but
it was little threat to a comfortable Newcastle performance.

| Match Reaction From
Graeme Souness |
Graeme Souness on the match:
"We
were comfortable from the start to be honest, because Coventry sat
back and allowed us a lot of possession.
"We kept plugging away at them but the goalkeeper made a couple of
fine saves and frustrated us a bit.
"It was important we remained patient, and once Alan got the first
goal it didn't take long for the second to follow.
"Unfortunately we gave a goal away right on half time as we have done
in a few games recently, but the third goal killed them off."
Amdy Faye on his debut:
"I
enjoyed my first appearance for my new club, though I will get better
when I get to know my new team-mates.
"It was a good victory for us, and I look forward to seeing who we
get in the next round.
"The game was a bit different to what I am used to in the Premiership,
but we had a lot of the ball and I had quite a bit to do. It was good
to be involved and get in the thick of things.
"I tired a bit towards the end, but when I have had a proper week
in training.
"I was really happy that the fans applauded me as I came off. It was
nice for me to be made to feel welcome, and it is an honour for me
to play for a club of this size.
"This is a big competition for the club, and at a club like this we
should be winning things. Hopefully this can be a good year for us.
Celestine Babayaro on his goal:
"There
is nothing better for a new player than getting a goal in a home game,
especially when it helps the team win a cup match.
"I did the back flip because it is how I express my feelings that
I'm happy to score a goal.
"It helps you make a good impression. I'm happy with my performance
and hopefully there will be more like that.
"The system we played against Coventry meant the manager wanted his
two full-backs to attack whenever possible, and I think we did that.
"When you arrive at a new club you want to settle into the team quickly,
but I injured my groin just before the Arsenal game last weekend and
I didn't enjoy having to watch the match on television. I hope I'm
back in the team to stay now.
"I cannot remember the last time I scored, or even when I last had
a long run of games, so I'm going to enjoy it.
"It was an important goal because the score was only 2-1 at the time.
It's nice to score a goal, especially one that counts for something.
"The FA Cup is important to us. If we can keep getting good draws
then I think we can go a long way."

From Mickey Adams |
Mickey Adams on the game:
"It was a fair result. To be honest, we are still learning lessons.
I saw an improvement in the way we went about things compared to last
week - particularly the way that we defended. Generally I'm pleased
with the effort although class tells in the end.
"Newcastle are a good bet for a run in the cup this season - particularly
if my old mate Shearer is packing it in as he'll want to win it."
