Not Good Enough
Part 2
By Maddog
Newcastle were once again held to a frustrating 1-1 draw, this time
at home to a high-flying Charlton side. It was fairly even match throughout,
with both sides having good chances to score more than one goal. Shearer
was the first to threaten the Charlton goal, rising to meet Amdy Faye's
cross but it was directed straight at Dean Kiely.
Shearer tried his luck once again moments later, forcing Kiely to
give a corner, though his shot didn't threaten the goal. Andy O'Brien,
playing with a new-found confidence strode out of the defence to hit
a blistering piledriver that Kiely failed to hold onto, with the ball
hitting the crossbar and going over for a corner.
While Charlton weren't doing too bad, Newcastle were having more of
the chances at the goal. Shearer was once again in the thick of the
things, setting up Dyer with a short cross which he volleyed over.
Lee Bowyer tried his luck with a long range effort which didn't trouble
the keeper.
However as half-time came, both Newcastle and Charlton had no clear
chances on the goal and maybe I could hear some boo-ing from the crowd.
Ameobi started off the match by missing a good chance after Shearer
squared up to him. While Shearer was having a vintage performance
and Dyer playing a blinder, Ameobi was sticking out like a sore thumb
up front. He rarely ever gets in good position for the midfielders
or his fellow strikers to pass to, and whenever he goes on dribbling
runs on the wing he loses the ball too easily.
However the focus was taken off him few minutes later when Shearer
tried to square up Ameobi with a low cross but an interception by
an Charlton defender meant the ball nicely fell to Dyer. His first
touch wasn't perfect and his finish seemed to take a lucky deflection
off El Karkouri, but it was an effective and well-deserved goal.
However ecstasy soon turn into despair, as Rommendahl equalized with
a stunning strike from outside the box with ricocheted off the pole
into the goal. Although Andy O'Brien gave away the ball leading to
the goal, I don't really think one can blame him too much as it was
an exceptional finish.
This was not the last we would see of Rommendahl. Rommendahl is one
of the trickiest wingers in Europe. I'm really surprised we didn't
really go for him in the summer, especially seeing as Nolberto Solano
had left.
Graeme Souness reply to the Charlton goal was decent double substitution
shocker, bring on Patrick Kluivert and Laurent Robert (to loud cheers)
for Bowyer and the once-again ineffective Ameobi. Robert's first touch
was a brilliant freekick which Titus Bramble rose to meet – he did
well to keep it on the goal but unfortunately it was straight at the
keeper.
The substitution left the game wide open – Rommendahl turned in Babayaro,
leaving him and Shay Given in a one-on-one and lifted the ball over
Given, which rolled just wide much to the relief of the Toon and dismay
of Rommendahl.
Rommendahl once again burst through, but this time Given came out
on top, saving with his legs as Rommendahl covered his face with his
shirt in dismay. Luke Young surging run out of the defence resulted
in a shot over the bar.
Rommendahl looked like he fancied another chance at the goal, but
Titus Bramble got in a brilliant well-time tackle that would have
resulted in a penalty had he been a bit late. Collective sighs of
relief where heard around St James Park when Rommendahl was taken
off.
With Rommendahl taken off, it was Newcastle's turn to threaten the
goal. Laurent Robert was just simply murdering the Charlton defence
and if he had been brought on earlier, would have definitely got a
goal or an assist.
Alan Shearer fired a left-footed shot just wide after being set-up
by Jermaine Jenas just outside the box. Patrick Kluivert chested down
a long ball to Shearer who had his goalbound shot blocked by El Karkouri.
The ball fell nicely to Patrick Kluivert but El Karkouri was the hero
for Charlton with another block, the ball falling to Jenas who had
an airshot before being fouled, but referee Mark Halsley refused to
point to the spot.
It was one of those fouls you sometimes get it, sometimes don't and
we were unlucky not to get it. Kluivert's chest down to Shearer was
the bit of class we've been missing recently, something that Ameobi
does not bring to the team.
I would like to see Kluivert start in the next game. He's an outstanding
player and very much looked like he wanted to prove himself when he
came on. He really needs some fashion tips, though. That hairstyle
doesn't suit him.
However as the final whistle blew, it was only a point that Newcastle
deserved once again.

down and volleyed it home - taking a slight deflection on the way.
NUFC Goal 53 Minutes: Dennis Rommedahl

sprung off his boot about 5-yards in front of him to Rommedahl who

| Match Reaction From
Graeme Souness |
Souness said:
"I
can understand that, yes (the booing).
"That's the price of playing at a big football club. You have
got to show what you are made of, you have got to want the ball at
all times, and I think we did that today.
"The majority, or the vast majority of them, did that from the
first minute to the last minute, and that is something we talk about
all the time. But the pressure is on at big clubs when you are not
winning every week, and that's something that we all have to deal
with.
"We all like the nice things in life, we all get paid very well.
Newcastle are a big football club with a big support and the price
on the ticket is that when you are not winning games, the pressure
is on and we all have to deal with it.
"The hardest job of all is to deal with that on the pitch for
90 minutes, and I think the players, the vast majority of them, dealt
with that very well today.
"The crowd have to understand, that was my plan whenever I came
here, frustrate the crowd and hope that transmits itself on to the
pitch. That was Charlton's game-plan today.
"We got ourselves into a lead and at that point, you are hoping
to keep it for 10-15 minutes.
"Charlton then would have to have changed their style, their
formation, which would have made it a bit more easy for us to get
through them, but we couldn't. We conceded a goal inside a minute,
and then it was just more of the same.
"We made changes to try to chase the game, and all of a sudden
we looked vulnerable down our left-hand side, and they could have
nicked it in the end. And then we could have won it in the last five
or six minutes ourselves, so it was a frustrating afternoon.
"But you have to give them credit. Charlton are a good team.
They are seventh in the league. They came and played a system, not
for the first time away from home, and it was up to us to go after
them and break it down."
| Match Reaction From Alan
Curbishley |
Curbishley said:
"Coming here today, we felt it would be a tough old game and
our game-plan was to still be in it at half-time, and I felt with
the players we have got and the pace about us, that we could do some
damage.
"Unfortunately, we just couldn't get that goal. We deserved it,
but we just couldn't get it.
"It's a great point for us. I'd like to think in the second half
we showed a few people what we are about. We defended fantastically
and just a little bit more on the break and we may have taken all
three points." |
