Our 3rd Pre-Season match sees the Toon back on the road again, this
time to East Anglia to take on Ipswich Town at Portman Road. A match
in honour of Ipswich's former Geordie assistant manager Dale Roberts
who sadly lost his battle with Cancer, passing away last year at the
age of 46. Roberts had been brought to Ipswich by United manager Sir
Bobby Robson back in 1974 as a player and the proceeds of this match
will go to various Cancer charities.
This match will see an emotional return to their former club for Bobby,
Dyer, Bramble and Ambrose with all 3 expected to play some part in
the game as Bobby promises to put out a strong team. Whether that
strong team will include new signing Patrick Kluivert remains to be
seen, though, like all of us, I'm sure Bobby is desperate to see him
in action and to team him up with the squad in a match environment.
Reports earlier this week however suggested that Bobby doesn't want
to risk Kluivert as he is unsure of his full fitness so I guess we'll
have to wait and see.
Bobby names 18-man squad for tonight's match
Craig Bellamy, back from an injury makes the squad but new signing
Patrick Kluivert doesn't. Olivier Bernard who didn't play in the Far
East due to an injury is also included but Jermaine Jenas (knock)
and Steven Taylor miss out. United squad:
Given, Harper, Hughes, Bramble, O'Brien, Bernard, Elliott, Brittain,
Ambrose, McClen, Bowyer, Milner, Dyer, Robert, Shearer, Ameobi, Chopra,
Bellamy.

Ipswich Town are a traditional English club based on a small but supportive
fan-base with an excellent youth system churning out talent after
talent - of which Newcastle have plundered on 3 occasions over the
years with the signings of Dyer, Bramble and Ambrose for a combined
£13m giving the Anglian club a hefty profit. It is this youth
system that is the lifeblood of the club which has enabled them to
produce a couple of promotion winning teams over the years. However
they have become a yo-yo club in the process and have yet to establish
themselves in the Premier League having been relegated from the top
Division twice (2002 & 1994-95). After financial difficulties
Ipswich are striving for promotion back to the Premiership after narrowly
missing out on a Play-Off spot last Season.
Their greatest era come courtesy of Sir Bobby Robson, an Ipswich legend,
who steered them to great success in winning the FA Cup (1978) and
the UEFA Cup in 1981) as well as finishing 2nd in the old top flight
in his 13 years at the helm before moving on to manage England in
1982. For his achievements Ipswich commissioned a statue of Bobby
which is situated outside of Portman Road alongside the statue of
another great Ipswich man - Sir Alf Ramsey who managed the Tractor
Boys to their one and only League Championship (1962) before becoming
the National manager then leading England to World Cup success back
in 1966.
| Last Meeting At Portman Road: |
Ipswich Town 0-1 NUFC Premiership Sunday December 9, 2001
A Nobby Solano tap in after 20 minutes was enough to give Newcastle
the 3 points in a game that Ipswich deserved at least a point from
as an under performing United kept up the pace at the top of the League
in a memorable Season in which we eventually finished 4th to clinch
that final Champions League spot. We were denied the double over the
Tractor Boys in a 2-2 draw at St. James' Park later on in the Season
when Alan Shearer sent his last minute penalty wide. (I remember it
like yesterday)
