So to our final Pre-Season game against Celtic at Parkhead tonight.
With 4 new signings and the possibility of more as well as the promise
of things to come with the 4-2 win over Rangers at St. Jame's Park
Saturday gone, it hasn't been a bad Summer (injuries excluded), but
now it gets serious. Bobby will want to field close to the team he'd
like to put out against Middlesbrough in 10 days time you would think
(injuries permitting) and players like Patrick Kluivert and Nicky
Butt will need a good run out tonight to top up their fitness levels
if they have any hope of starting at the Riverside.
In that respect I'd like to see both start, especially Kluivert who
looks way off the pace, far more than others. I'd like to see Big
Al rested and Bellamy to start alongside the Dutchman...who knows
this could be a partnership we'll have to rely on if or when the Number
9 tires which he is bound to do in what will be a long hard Season
(aren't they all?).
It will be interesting to see how Celtic approach this game, one thing
is certain - they will not leave big holes at the back like their
fierce City rivals did in the Newcastle Gatsehead cup. All Martin
O'Neill teams are well organised and hard to beat. Although Liverpool
put 5 past them in their tour of the States and Chelsea 4. However
Celtic did beat Man Utd.
This game has a draw written all over it (as do most of our away games)
and although it would be good to pick up an away win just to stop
the rot the result isn't of any real significance, getting certain
players fitter and a good hard work out is. Good luck to Bobby and
the lads, not long to go now folks...
Patrick Kluivert and Nicky Butt are both expected to play
a bigger part in this match with Butt likely to start alongside Dyer
in midfield with Bowyer ruled out having picked up the eye infection
that has ruled both Shay Given and Andy O'Brien out of this match.
James Milner should also feature but Darren Ambrose, Jonathan Woodgate,
Shola Ameobi & Steven taylor will not feature.
Meanwhile the Toon's latest signing Charles N'Zogbia has not received
international clearance yet.
United squad to face Celtic:
Harper, Hughes, Bramble, Elliott, Bernard, Milner, Butt, Jenas, Dyer,
Pattison, Robert, Brittain, Shearer, Kluivert, Bellamy, Chopra, Gate,
Ramage, Smith.
New Celtic signing Henri Camara who played in both games against us
last Season for Wolves (without scoring) is expected to make his Hoops
debut at some stage of the match. Geordie boy Alan Thompson will not
feature after picking up an injury.
Celtic squad to face Newcastle:
Marshall, Hedman, McNamara, Sylla, Valgaaren, Balde, Cuthbert, Sutton,
Camara, Hartson, Beattie, Pearson, Wallace, McGeady, Laursen, Lennon,
O'Dea, Petrov, McManus, Varga, McBride.
Stan Varga
Former Mackem centre-half who threatened to become a cult hero on
Wearside before settling into another Peter Reid mediocre signing
like the vast majority of them. Revitalised at Park Head under the
man management skills of Martin O'Niell. Still worthy of a boo or
two...
Celtic 2-0 NUFC Friendly (July 27th 1999)
Newcastle traveled to Parkhead back in 99 with 4 new signings on show
- Ziegler, Marcelino, Goma and Dumas. Celtic managed by Former Magpie
John Barnes won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Olivier Tebily and
Mark Viduka.
The team that day was:
Ziegler, Charvet, Marcelino, Goma, Domi, Solano (McClen 64min), Dumas
(Hughes 89min), Speed, Serrant (Maric 64min), Ketsbaia, Shearer (Robinson
61min). Subs not used: Perez, Barton, Kerr, Coppinger, Beharall.
